An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Smoking Cessation Advisor to support treating tobacco dependency in secondary care and help to provide on-going support for people to quit, both in the hospital as an inpatient and following discharge.
This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated, passionate, organised and proactive individual with experience working within a secondary care environment.
Main duties of the job
The Government 10 - year forward plan has highlighted NICE PH48 as the way forward to have the biggest impact on the reduction of smoking prevalence in England, ultimately the intervention which will have the biggest drive in reducing health inequalities nationally.
As a Smoking Cessation Advisor for Secondary Care, you will be an integral part of Smoking Cessation in the hospital, under the supervision of the Respiratory Specialist Nurse you will support with ensuring a medical model of care for smoking cessation is an integrated part of routine client care by all health professionals. Ultimately this programme will lead to the most significant referral route for the overall smoking cessation service within the county.
Working for our organisation
The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:
- The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds
- Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility
- Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.
The Trust employs over 6258 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 407,000. This includes 357,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.
The Trust is a busy district general hospital and in 2022/2023, there were more than 503,342 patient attendances (inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery. This is an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year when there were 494,387 patient attendances.

Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. Costs are deducted from salary following appointment. The cost of the DBS application is £23 (standard) or £43 (enhanced), this cost will be deducted from your salary over the first three months of employment.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Good General Education with GCSE English and Mathematics
- ECDL or equivalent experience
- Level 3 Health or social care qualification (e.g. NVQ or similar)
Desirable criteria
- Level 4 Health or social care qualification (e.g. foundation degree)
- Basic counselling
- Specific training in health promotion interventions
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Relevant Health or Social Care experience
- Experience of providing healthcare, healthcare advice or health improvement/promotion advice to patients or members of the public
- Efficient in the use of Microsoft Word for Windows, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and internet.
- Knowledge and experience of database management and an understanding of its importance in the effective day to day delivery of health services
- Advanced knowledge of medical terminology.
- Understanding of person-centred care.
- Experience of coaching/teaching patients and carers.
Applicant requirements
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
