Job overview

Applications are invited for a Locum  Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in Hand and Wrist,  based at Leighton Hospital,  Crewe.  This is a fixed term post until 30/01/2026.

The successful applicant will join a dynamic forward thinking team of Orthopaedic Surgeons with a range of special interests, including lower limb arthroplasty,  foot and ankle, shoulder and elbow and hand and wrist.  

The orthopaedic sub division is supported by a full time  Consultant Orthogeriatrician and an accompanying team.

The successful applicant must have full registration with the GMC and continue to hold a Licence to Practice.

 

Main duties of the job

Whilst the successful candidate will work the majority of their time at Leighton, there will be occasions where it will be necessary to work at Victoria Royal Infirmary, Northwich  for outpatient clinics.

The successful candidate will provide a rage of duties including elective operating, trauma operating, elective and fracture clinics, MDT and on-call.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post is offered at 10PAs with 9 PAs allocated to DCC and 1 PA  allocated to SPA.

There is a requirement for the successful candidate to participate on the on-call rota and this is currently 1:12 weekends and 1 weekday every 3 weeks.

Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration and LTP
  • FRCS or equivalent
  • Primary Medical Degree
  • ATLS
Desirable criteria
  • Further postgraduate degree
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview). CESR or European Community Rights.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Specialist Registrar Training or equivalent in Orthopaedic Surgery
  • An understanding of departmental management
Desirable criteria
  • Managerial Training
  • Hand and wrist surgery training with fellowship

Ability

Essential criteria
  • Proven ability in trauma and orthopaedic surgery
  • Evidence of ability to lead a team effectively
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of personal outcome data related to specialist interest in hand and wrist surgery.

Audit and Research

Essential criteria
  • Interest and knowledge of audit
  • Evidence of completion of audit
  • Publlished research or audits or case reports in peer reviewed journals
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of experience in research and relevant publications related to hand and wrist surgery and trauma

Teaching and Education

Essential criteria
  • Evidence to allow accreditation as a Consultant Clinical Supervisor for trainee doctors with the GMC
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence to allow accreditation as a Consultant Educational

Other

Essential criteria
  • Effective communication skills. Highly innovative
Desirable criteria
  • Up to date knowledge of NHS and future challenges
