Hywel Dda University Health Board are looking to recruit a Specialist Occupational Therapy Technician based at Bro Myrddin Wellbeing Hwb in Carmarthen. This is a great opportunity for a motivated, enthusiastic, caring individual with a passion for working with young people and families. You will need to demonstrate excellent communication skills, enjoy working as part of a multi-disciplinary team and independently.

Specialist Occupational Therapy Technicians are essential staff within the multi-disciplinary team in delivering quality care and support to children and young people. This post is a great opportunity for community working and you will be completing the Agored Occupational Therapy Diploma as part of the role which is excellent for career development.

The ability to travel across 3 counties is essential.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit a motivated, caring, and conscientious individual who wants to make a difference in the lives of children and young people struggling with often complex mental health issues. You will be part of a developing multi-disciplinary team and will have contact with patients and their families, other professionals from different disciplines and partner agencies. Your work in the team will be professionally supported by the lead occupational therapist and there are also opportunities for peer support from professionals working across the service.

Duties will include delivering community services to children and young people as delegated by Lead OT, working as part as the Occupational Therapy service to deliver therapeutic intervention as delegated by designated Occupational Therapist. Modifying the treatment plan in consultation with the responsible therapist. To include one to one and group interventions. Support the qualified Occupational Therapist with standard Occupational Therapy assessments, to inform discharge planning and community transition.

You will also support the team in developing a high-quality service by contributing to service development and reviews and working collaboratively with partner agencies and third sector organisations. Continued professional development and training opportunities will be encouraged and supported.

Person specification

Qualification and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Numeracy and literacy to minimum GCSE level
  • Level 4 in a relevant health and social care discipline or equivalent experience
  • Ability and willingness to complete the Level 4 OT Support Worker Diploma
  • Knowledge of Occupational Therapy principles and grading / task analysis to improve function
  • Knowledge of leisure, creative and technical skills and its application within one to one and group interventions.
  • Understanding of the roles of other staff groups in health and social care settings
  • Understanding of voluntary sector services
  • IT skills / qualification and competency with software packages
Desirable criteria
  • All Wales passports in Moving & Handling and Managing Violence and Aggression
  • Professional, technical or academic qualifications which relate to clinical Speciality i.e Emotional Coping Skills, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy principles
  • Relevant additional courses to support clinical work i.e. motivational interviewing Solution Focused Therapy

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Range of clinical experience as support staff within therapy services
  • Experience of inpatient, community mental health services
  • Experience of grading and adapting activities for rehabilitation to promote independence
  • Experience of working as part of a team
  • Experience of working autonomously within ward and or community setting
  • Experience of working with groups of patients
  • An interest in / practical knowledge of a range of technical and practical skills
Desirable criteria
  • Additional clinical or health care related experience
  • Supervision of junior support staff
