Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Laundry Lead Engineer based at Llansamlet Laundry.

The role will involve the day-to-day line management of the maintenance department coordinating and the full range of maintenance activities in the plant such as day to day running of the PPM system, organising installations, upkeep of stock, ordering of spare parts, management of onsite contractors.

Duties will include the management of staff and resources within their allocated department to achieve optimum plant performance as prescribed by laundry management and coordinating service requirements with the Laundry Manager and Deputy.

The post holder will assume responsibility for monitoring the quality of work produced within the section and will be instrumental in motivating staff and in identifying and providing support for the training and development of engineering staff. The post holder will be the lead for Health and Safety standards on site.

The initial hours worked for this role would be Monday to Friday 7.30 to 15.30, however, the hours of work will be based on the needs of the service and could include working between the two current shift patterns and proving cover for leave and sickness of other members of the department.  This includes weekend work as well as working 12-hour days.  The successful candidate would also be responsible for cover if additional hours are required in the plant and supporting other LPU’s within the All-Wales Laundry Service. 

Main duties of the job

The Lead Engineer must have served a recognised apprenticeship in either mechanical, electrical disciplines, completed a relevant City & Guilds craft certificate course and possess a sound knowledge of trade principles and practice.

They must have gained a thorough understanding of Engineering maintenance systems and have significant experience, having demonstrated high versatility and flexibility and have kept abreast of technical knowledge associated with a healthcare environment.

To provide technical information and to advise other staff groups of maintenance issues which may have an impact on service delivery.

To manage, plan and prioritise maintenance or minor works activities on a day to day and long-term basis and to ensure the workforce are gainfully employed at all times.

To possess the necessary IT skills needed to enter and manipulate data associated with the Frontline maintenance management system and electronic procurement system.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this role; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Post graduate/diploma or equivalent level of knowledge acquired through courses and experience in construction or engineering subject.
  • Professional Knowledge of a full range of trade procedures acquired through a 4 year accredited training course on required equipment; level 3 vocational qualification or equivalent plus relevant training or equivalent experience, plus additional training and developed skills e.g. pneumatics/hydraulics.
  • Experience in Mechanical and Electrical Maintenance and able to demonstrate versatility and flexibility along with a range of work procedures, practices underpinned by theory or practical experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist Knowledge of industrial laundry maintenance and evidence of significant CPD.
  • Healthcare engineering related CPD.
  • Recognised qualifications in both Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Qualifications and experience attained in hydraulics, pneumatics, PLC programming and steam generator control systems.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of Health and Safety management practices. Development and implementation of risk management schedules and safe systems of work.
  • "Experience of planning and implementing planned preventive maintenance schedule. "
  • Experience of working within a complex engineering service industry on one or more areas of specialist engineering maintenance. Completion of a structured training programme/18th Edition /Gas Safe or F-Gas Qualification. Able to work on own initiative.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of working within the NHS.
  • Experience of implementing performance management systems, including IIP, KPIs, etc.
  • Fire Alarm Systems, compressors Industrial laundry equipment.

Essential Skills

Essential criteria
  • Well-developed interpersonal, communication and negotiating skills to include staff of all disciplines both internally and externally, able to effectively chair meetings.
  • Articulate and numerate. Excellent communications skills (written and verbal).
  • Demonstrate leadership of teams and individuals. Able to deal with suppliers and rectify disputes.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to speak Welsh
  • IT literate on Microsoft Office Packages
