Job overview

We are seeking a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist with relevant experience in diagnostic Microbiology, to join the Public Health Wales Microbiology Service based at Glan Clwyd Hospital.

Public Health Wales Microbiology North Wales has a central (hub) laboratory within a new pathology build at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd (Bodelwyddan) and has acute service spoke laboratories at Ysbyty Gwynedd (Bangor) and Ysbyty Maelor (Wrexham). This post will primarily be based at  Glan Clwyd Hospital (Rhyl) but the post holder will be required to support the other laboratories when necessary.  North Wales Microbiology provides a wide range of diagnostic services to hospitals, clinics and general practitioners across North Wales. The laboratory provides diagnostic bacteriology, viral serology, benefits from Kiestra Automation and a range of molecular platforms. The laboratory is ISO 15189 accredited and approved for training purposes.

Main duties of the job

Applicants will need to be educated to Masters level or possess a higher specialist diploma. Candidates will need to be able to demonstrate well developed interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to lead and support individual and team working. The successful candidate will supervise a defined section of the laboratory, undertake aspects of diagnostic laboratory work and support the Operational Manager to take forward key service and workforce objectives.

The laboratory operates a 7 day, 24 hr service and working patterns will include shifts covering core days, evenings and weekends on a rotational basis.

North Wales benefits from easy access to coast, mountains and proximity to Liverpool, Chester and all that city life has to offer - so walkers, climbers, cyclists, sailors, shoppers and nightlife seekers are all catered for - the best of all worlds.  North Wales also has affordable housing and good public transport and road links across Wales to England and further afield - with Ireland also only a short boat trip away.

Informal visits are actively encouraged, come see the laboratory and meet the team.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post but not essential; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
