Job overview
The post holder works in the team which keeps the linear accelerator treatment machines and other radiotherapy equipment, operational, maintained, repaired and safe, and assists with their installation, commissioning, QA and development. It also includes designing innovative equipment and giving specialist advice. They will also participate in the team which maintains the IT networks between the treatment facilities. This work is essential for the effective treatment of cancer patients.
Radiotherapy Physics provides all the background scientific and technical data, advice and expertise to the radiotherapy and physics departments for the treatment machines, computer systems and specialized devices. This is fundamental for patient doses to be prescribed and given correctly, safe operation of equipment and staff protection from X-Rays. It includes specifications for the equipment, calibration and QA, repair & maintenance, data networking and computer control, and individualized patient dose computations. Its expert sections include mechanical engineering, machine maintenance & repair, brachytherapy, computing & electronics, treatment planning, dosimetry, training & teaching, and R&D. It also provides a full Radiation Protection service to all X-Ray users in SE Wales.
Main duties of the job
Specific responsibilities for computing include:
- To participate in providing planned and emergency maintenance and repair of highly complex treatment systems.
- To advise on the safe working condition and alignment of clinical treatment machines.
- To assist in the system management of the radiotherapy treatment computer systems.
- Undertakes Quality Assurance regimes on treatment machines according to local protocol.
- Undertakes specific Research and Development Projects and helps instigate changes of practice which result from these.
- Assist with the commissioning of treatment machines as required.
Specific responsibilities for other services will depend on the skills of the post holder.
There is a requirement to support the work across the breadth of the department on a call and rota basis.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BSc or Equivalent - Electrical & Electronic Engineering.
- Equivalent of HND/C with demonstrable experience to Degree level
Desirable criteria
- MSc – In an appropriate subject.
- Knowledge of Quality Assurance schemes and principles in RT.
- Attended and successfully completed any Radiotherapy treatment equipment Manufacturers’ advanced training courses.
- IOSH Working Safely Course
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience at Band 5 level or above in Linear Accelerator maintenance
- Equivalent experience gained with a Linear Accelerator manufacturer.
- Both the above should include training to Post Grad Level
Desirable criteria
- Other relevant experience gained outside the NHS could be considered.
- R&D off one’s own initiative
- Eligibility to join the Register of Clinical Technologists.
Skills
Essential criteria
- Good communicator with good verbal and written skills.
- Use of electronic analysis tools & interpretation of results.
Desirable criteria
- Proven ability with computer s/w development and its adaptation
