Please be advised that there is a temporary top up for Bands 1,2 and 3 to reflect the incorporation of the top up to the living wage of £12 per hour - £23,465 per annum. This temporary top up will be in place until the annual pay uplift for 2024/25 is confirmed
Job overview
The Paralegal would act for and on behalf of Cardiff and Vale UHB in the support of Inquest proceedings and related requests from the Coroner. The Paralegal will have the opportunity to attend inquests, support the legal team and the staff.
The pos-tholder will support educational seminars to Cardiff and Vale UHB staff in relation to legal, clinical and risk management strategies related to inquests. The Paralegal will work as part of the team to monitor and suggest improvements to promote compliance with the rules of the Coroner’s Court.
Main duties of the job
We are looking to recruit an experienced Paralegal who is seeking to develop their inquest work alongside fantastic leadership from our Solicitors and Head of Inquests. The post-holder will work within the Inquest Team and with Clinicians and data systems as well as direct work with the Coroner. The post-holder will support the team with legal advice and guidance to work within Cardiff and Vale UHB. The post-holder would build strong partnerships with other colleagues in the wider team in Cardiff and Vale UHB and beyond. There will be close working relationships between this post and the Head of Inquests and will be supervised by a Solicitor
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications and knowledge
Essential criteria
- Graduate (or equivalent) or CILEX Member OR Significant relevant experience managing inquests
- Significant specialist knowledge within law field - Knowledge of Legal System
- Knowledge of Coroners Rules and Regulations
- Knowledge of Civil Procedure Rules
Desirable criteria
- Law degree OR Post Graduate Diploma in Law OR CILEX member
- Knowledge of NHS structure, services and policies
Experience
Essential criteria
- Recent experience providing legal services
- Excellent interpersonal skills - written and verbal communication
- Good analytical skills
- Ability and skills to maintain a PC database
- Ability to represent the legal service team in a professional manner at all times
- Able to provide and receive complex and sensitive information
- Able to maintain concentration with frequent interruption
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working for or with NHS organisations
- Recent experience managing inquests
- Recent experience assisting in the provision of legal advice in to healthcare providers
- Knowledge and experience of Datix risk management system or other case management systems

Applicant requirements
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
