Developing Specialist Speech & Language Therapist - Stroke

Base: Peterborough City Hospital


Are you a dynamic Speech and Language Therapist looking to develop your 
skills in a busy stroke unit? Are you passionate about supporting patients with communication impairments as well as those with dysphagia. 


This exciting post is available due to service expansion and would suit a 
newly qualified SLT or an SLT with existing experience including in another 
setting. Our service has regular video-fluoroscopy clinics and a FEES service.


The Speech and Language therapy team at North West Anglia NHS 
Foundation Trust are a friendly and supportive team. We have regular cross-site team meetings with a strong focus on CPD, on a range of dysphagia and communication topics.

This specialist SLT role works within the stroke MDT providing enhanced skills in the field of post stroke speech, communication and swallowing problems.

They provide specialist and bespoke clinical assessment, management and rehabilitation plans.  They support mental capacity assessments and advise the MDT on risks and prognosis to enable effective patient flow, risk identification and management whilst an acute inpatient. They act within own scope of practice and escalate when support is required with overall management plan.

  • Recognised Speech and Language Qualification –Degree or equivalent
  • Registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council

  • Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Working towards RCSLT Dysphagia competencies Level A/ B/Entry level Dysphagia competencies

Experience

  • Experience of working with adults with communication disorders either as a student or an SLT

  • Experience of working with adults with eating, drinking and/or swallowing problems either as a student or an SLT

Knowledge

  • Thorough theoretical understanding of a range of communication and swallowing assessments and therapeutic approaches for adults.
  • Sound theoretical understanding of communication and swallowing disorders in adults
  • Able to use clinical reasoning to hypothesise diagnosis and formulate appropriate management with support

Skills

  • Demonstrates ability to be a good team member as well as to work independently and manage own caseload
  • Standard key board skills & the ability to use IT packages such as Word, Outlook, Power point & Excel
