This exciting post is available due to service expansion. Whilst our preference  would be an SLT with existing stroke experience, we will consider those with strong transferable skills that could be developed into the role. 

This band 6 role will provide specialist skills on to the stroke unit (which consists of a 12 bed HDU and 22 Acute beds). There will be opportunities to participate in the regular videofluoroscopy clinics and FEES service.

The Speech and Language therapy team at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust are a friendly and supportive team. We have regular cross-site team meetings with a strong focus on CPD.

Main duties of the job

This specialist SLT role works within the stroke MDT providing enhanced skills in the field of post stroke speech, communication and swallowing problems.

They provide specialist and bespoke clinical assessment, management and rehabilitation plans.  They support mental capacity assessments and advise the MDT on risks and prognosis to enable effective patient flow, risk identification and management whilst an acute inpatient. They act within own scope of practice and escalate when support is required with overall management plan.

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • Recognised Speech and Language Qualification –Degree or equivalent
  • Registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council
  • Post Graduate Dysphagia Qualification or equivalent inhouse training to RCSLT Competencies or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Evidence of Completion of relevant specialist short courses or equivalent in-house training.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with a wide range of acquired communication and swallowing disorders within an acute or community setting
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of supporting junior staff, students or clinical assistants
  • Experience of running training sessions on communication and/or swallowing issues to other health and social care professionals

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of varying approaches to the assessment and management of patients with dysphagia including instrumental assessments (Video fluoroscopy / FEES)
  • Knowledge of adult communication impairments and swallowing problems to a specialist level

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates ability to be a good team member as well as to work independently and manage own caseload
  • Standard key board skills & the ability to use IT packages such as Word, Outlook, Power point & Excel

Aptitudes

Essential criteria
  • Accepts responsibility and accountability for own work and can define the responsibilities of others
  • Recognises the limits of own authority within the role
  • Seeks and uses professional support appropriately
  • Understands the principle of confidentiality
  • Ability to cope with emotionally demanding situations, monitor and manage own stress levels and seek support as required
