The Trust have recently implemented a digital pre-assessment system to support standardisation of clinical assessments across sites, improve the service quality and efficiency. Preoperative Assessment is a nurse-led assessment service that is integral to supporting elective surgery – focusing on the identification of patients that are fit to proceed to surgery and supporting to optimise patients. The team are currently appointing a Band 5 Registered Nurse. The job role is to pre-assess patients planned to undergo a surgical procedure in line with the Trust’s guidelines, policies and procedures. To request investigations and tests, and interpret results, escalating as appropriate, and to support elective surgery within the Trust and work within a multidisciplinary team utilise effective communication.
**Post could be either PCH or HH and cross site working maybe required**

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Use effective communication skills of negotiation, persuasion, and empathy to enable timely and effective communication in own team the wider multidisciplinary team and other departments.
- Complete a full pre-assessment ensuring ongoing investigations are completed, and results are actioned. Interpret results and escalate as appropriate.
- Provide medication advice to patients in preparation for their surgery.
- Complete pre-assessment of patients both for inpatient and day case, adhering to the service’s guidelines and policies. Referring any health issues arising from the patient’s pre-assessment to the appropriate individual/service.
- Order investigations and blood tests within scope of practice.
- Supervise Band 2 Healthcare Assistants with pre-assessment tests and investigations.

Education/Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Degree level education or equivalent knowledge and skills gained through any combination of alternative study, or employment experience
- Current Registered Nurse with Nurses and Midwifery Council (NMC)
Desirable criteria
- Preoperative Assessment course
Experience
Essential criteria
- Completed clinical placements in a variety of areas
- Post-registration experience in an acute setting
- Working with a Multidisciplinary Team
Desirable criteria
- Awareness of local and national agendas for Pre-Assessment
Skills
Desirable criteria
- Ability to undertake venepuncture and cannulation or being willing to achieve competency
Communication
Essential criteria
- Ability to present information both written and orally in a clear and logical manner
- Ability to communicate complex, sensitive and/or confidential information in an appropriate manner
