We are looking for an enthusiastic Dietitian to join our innovative Food First Team in Luton and South Bedfordshire.

We are looking for:

  1. Someone with a passion for the food-based approach to nutritional care
  2. Someone who can work flexibly & in a variety of settings
  3. Someone looking develop their clinical knowledge & skills
  4. Ability to travel independently across the Bedfordshire

The Food First project aims to improve the identification and management of malnutrition and dehydration in older people. The team works closely with local care homes to help them meet the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) Regulation 14: Meeting nutritional and hydration needs.

  • Manage a caseload of individuals with a variety of conditions in residential and nursing homes and a small number of individuals in the community in Luton & South Bedfordshire
  • Be responsible for providing dietetic support (which may include enteral feeding)
  • Work closely with different health care professionals and be a valued member of care home MDTs
  • Provide training to a variety of health professionals on the food-based approach to nutritional care
  • Take part in GP nutritional product prescribing audits to support the appropriate prescribing of these products
  • Have the chance to see the use of gathering data in demonstrating the value of a Dietitian and effectiveness to service users

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. To deliver a Food First dietetic service to service users.
  2. Workload may include other aspects of clinical community dietetics, e.g. clinics, home visits or home enteral tube feeding.
  3. To actively support the delivery of the Food First accreditation programme to local care homes.
  4. To contribute to the development and provision of education and training on a range of dietetic issues to health and social care professionals.
  5. To work independently and undertake lone working in the community.
  6. To support delivery of clinically and cost-effective care and support primary care with the appropriate prescribing of nutritional products.
  7. To represent the team and department at exhibitions, events, and local meetings.
  8. To be involved in undertaking development work within the Team, this could include clinical audits, service improvement, resource development, newsletters, and updates to social media/websites.
  9. To contribute to the training of student Dietitians.
  10. To ensure work is in line with departmental, trust and national dietetic standards.
  11. To understand any other Band 5 Dietetic duties identified by the team or Team Lead as required for the successful delivery of the Food First Project

Communication

  1. To establish and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with other staff. Positive relationships are characterised by open communication, trust, and respect.
  2. To use a range of different communication skills; including motivational interviewing, counselling skills, negotiating skills and cognitive behavioural therapy to help service users and professionals to achieve their nutritional goals/standards, considering any barriers to change that may exist.
  3. To communicate effectively with service users and carers to ensure understanding of condition and treatment plans.
  4. To liaise with nursing, medical, catering and other health and social care professionals concerning the treatment of service users whether in their own home or in a cared for environment.
  5. To advise and liaise with social care staff concerning the dietary needs of service users and work closely with dietetic and social care colleagues on issues such as initiatives to improve nutrition of service users, menu planning and provision of therapeutic diets.
  6. To contribute as required to the multidisciplinary team via uni-professional and multi-professional education sessions and meetings, clear written communication, and joint assessments (if appropriate).
  7. To advise primary, community and acute colleagues on the appropriate prescribing, follow up and monitoring of ACBS approved nutritional supplements, based on available evidence including assessment of individual clinical needs.
  8. To be involved in the on-going development and delivery of group education sessions for qualified and unqualified carers.
  9. To attend department meetings and team meetings.

Budgetary Responsibility

Does not hold budgetary responsibility but is aware of the need to manage available Food First resources to plan non-pay expenditure for the team.

People Management

Maintaining own professional development and requirement to take part in appraisal and KSF process.

Clinical and Practice Governance

  1. Observe and maintain strict confidentiality with regards to any patient/family/staff/records and information in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act.
  2. Any data that is taken/shared as part of a phone call or transported, faxed, or transferred electronically must be undertaken with regard to the Trust Information Governance and Information Security policies.
  3. The post holder must adhere to the Trust risk assessment and risk management processes
  4. The post holder must adhere to infection control policies and procedures
  5. It is a condition of your employment that you are currently registered with HCPC and it is your responsibility to maintain your professional registration.
  6. Undertake mandatory training and any other training relevant to the role as required by Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust.
  7. The post holder must participate in clinical and safeguarding audits as required
  8. Participate in Clinical & Safeguarding supervision on a regular basis
  9. The post holder is required to participate in relevant emergency preparedness process for their team.
