We have a new and exciting opportunity for a motivated and flexible individual to join our diverse team. With the opportunity to work as a Health Care Assistant / Community phlebotomist in an integrated role, primarily working as HCA from the Luton Treatment Centre.

You will be based at the Luton Treatment Centre providing basic Nursing care support to the Nursing team and also working in the community visiting patients to provide blood testing in their own homes and also in other clinical bases as part of the community phlebotomy service. At times where other services are facing staffing issues you may be required to assist within your skill set.

The successful candidate must have experience of working as a health care assistant or equivalent. Competence in venepuncture is desirable although full training and support for the right candidate will be given. Time spent between the health care assistant and the community phlebotomy roles will vary depending on the needs of the services.

This role will predominantly be clinic based but will require home visits as and when necessary dependant on staffing levels. Provide phlebotomy clinics at the Luton Treatment Centre as required and assisting the Community Phlebotomists with domiciliary visits where necessary. At times where other services are facing staffing issues you may be required to assist within your skill set.

Main Duties and Responsibilities 

To provide basic nursing care support to the Nursing team

Provide phlebotomy clinics at the Luton Treatment Centre

Assist the Community Phlebotomist Service with domiciliary visits where necessary.

When undertaking home visits on scheduled days to plan visits accordingly.

Assess the client’s registration forms and initiate investigations (to include blood pressure, weight, height, BMI, urinalysis, screening blood tests, blood glucose tests).

To provide basic dressings as directed by nursing team.

To set up clinical areas prior to clinic and adhere to universal precautions.

To chaperone and assist clients attending for procedures (on and off examination couch, escorting within the building and out to their car)
Always Act as an ambassador for the Luton Treatment Centre, welcoming visitors, patients, partners, and other multidisciplinary users of the centre.

To give general advice to patients regarding services, referring them to staff/agencies as required

Check all equipment prior to clinic and report any defects to appropriate personnel.

To take appropriate emergency action as required and to immediately inform the nurse in charge or manager.

To participate in staff meetings and take minutes in the absence of the administrative staff.

To assist in the collection of information for audit purposes

To rotate stock according to expiry dates

To put supplies, pharmacy, logistics and stores away

To ensure bins are emptied at the end of each clinic.

Communication

Greet patients attending clinics at LTC and signpost them accordingly.

To record accurate, concise information on patient care within the patient notes

To always maintain confidentiality of patients

To communicate patient information to medical/nursing staff as appropriate to patient care

Budgetary Responsibility 

To monitor stock in partnership with nursing team and co-ordinate ordering of supplies, logistics and equipment as required

People Management

Participate in the induction of students and Health Care Staff.

Development of staff

Maintaining own professional development and requirement to take part in appraisal and one to one process.

Research & Development Activity 

Required to undertake Research and development activity e.g. Hand washing and essential steps on a regular basis.

Participate in obtaining patient engagement feedback on a continual basis. Audits as and when required.

Clinical and Practice Governance

 Observe and maintain strict confidentiality with regards to any patient/family/staff/records and information in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act.

Any data that is taken/shared as part of a phone call, transported, or transferred electronically must be undertaken with regards to the Trust Information Governance and Information Security policies.

Qualifications & Training

  • N.A.P venepuncture qualification or equivalent or a willingness to undertake training within an agreed timeframe
  • Must be able to evidence ‘Achievement of Care Certificate or be willing to complete this within first 6 months of employment OR Achievement of a vocationally related qualification (e.g. NVQ in Health and social care/ clinical healthcare)
  • Willingness to undertake Trust mandatory, statutory and essential training and further training related to the role to meet the needs of the service

Experience
