Job overview
The appointee will provide Consultant leadership and psychiatric input to the Acute assessment unit (Mulberry 1) at Fulbourn hospital. They will work with the multidisciplinary team and establish good liaison and links with the community teams.
Main duties of the job
This post consists of 10 Programmed Activities (10 PAs) of which 7.5 PAs are for direct clinical care and 2.5 PAs for supporting activities. The consultant will be responsible for the care of patients admitted to the Mulberry wards, alongside other consultant colleagues. The consultant will work with well-established services alongside other medical and non-medical colleagues in these teams. The appointed consultant will provide strong leadership to the teams and drive further service developments in acute care.
There is robust junior doctor cover in the form of speciality doctors/higher trainees and core psychiatric trainees. In addition, all inpatient teams are supported by FY trainees.
The successful candidate will be working alongside consultant colleagues in the South of the County. The post will involve close working relationship with modern matron, nurse specialists and team managers. There will be opportunities to take on management responsibilities both internally within the trust as well as externally with the Royal College. Mentoring will also be provided to help the new consultant settle in.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Role of the Consultant Psychiatrist covers the following areas:

The post holder will:
· Work in accordance with the New Ways of Working initiative for Consultants, attend regular team meetings such as MDT meetings and formulation meetings to discuss clinical issues with team members, care coordinators, inpatient doctors and other statutory agencies as required for the care of community patients.
· Work closely with other consultant colleagues to ensure that the patient journey is as smooth as possible.
· Give clinical leadership and actively liaise with general practitioners, psychiatrists and other hospital specialists, statutory and non-statutory agencies, whenever relevant to the care and treatment of patients.
· Be committed to a multidisciplinary approach to care.
· Use evidence-based interventions at all times.
· Offer a consistent response to referrers/service users regardless of origin of referral in a timely fashion.
· Offer an accurate diagnosis and timely interventions so that intensive treatment can be delivered to prevent chronicity and dependency on psychiatric services, in accordance with the recovery model.
· Attend Mental Health Act assessments as requested for relevant patients.
· Act as the Responsible Clinician for inpatients including attending Tribunals, as necessary.
· Participate in the development and maintenance of care programmes for patients.
· Supervise junior and middle grade doctors in the team.
· Participate in the teaching programmes of the multidisciplinary team.
· Contribute to the collection of clinical information to ensure further service development and to enable audit.
· Work closely with Consultant colleagues to contribute to the provision of appropriate Consultant cover for daytime, 9 am to 5 pm, (working days) and for periods of annual/study/special leave.
· Participate in the on call Consultant rota primarily for advice as Consultants are on the 3rd Tier.
· Participate in clinical governance activities.
· Contribute to the teaching activities in the Trust.
· Participate in teaching within the trust.
· Contribute to the day-to-day management and to the overall service development agenda through appropriate involvement with managerial and clinical colleagues.
· Undergo annual appraisal and fulfil the requirements of continuing professional development (CPD) in order to meet the criteria for revalidation by the General Medical Council.
· Agree a job plan with the Clinical Director.
· Attend the Trust Wide Medical Advisory Groups.

Education/Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration and licence to practice
- MBBS or equivalent
- Approved Clinician Status or eligible to attend training
Desirable criteria
- Relevant Higher Degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications
- Completion of Clinical and Educational Supervisor Training
Entry criteria for grade
Essential criteria
- Specialty Registration in specialty
- CCT in relevant specialty or within 6 months of attainment of Higher Training CCT at time of interview
- Shall have equivalent experience and competencies recognised by GMC
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in assessing and treating mental health patient in out-patient and community settings.
- Experience of multi-disciplinary working
- Experience of training doctors in training
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working across different services within mental health. Other relevant experience, e.g. specific psychological therapies.
- Qualifications of experience in managing physical illness
Skills/Ability/Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Previous experience in taking a leadership role in several multi-disciplinary teams, ensuring high quality care and staff morale.
