Job overview

The Liaison Psychiatry Service based at Cambridge University Hospital (Addenbrookes) have an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Nurse Specialist / Mental Health Professional to join the well-established and supportive older persons team working 2-days per week (0.4 WTE). The liaison psychiatry service is highly regarded nationally and is accredited through the Psychiatric Liaison Accreditation Network (PLAN). The service consists of highly skilled psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists and well-being practitioners.

The service aims to offer exceptional standards of care to all patients attending Cambridge University Hospital (Addenbrookes) experiencing a comorbid mental health issue. As such, a rare opportunity has arisen to recruit a dynamic CNS / MHP on a permanent contract who will carry out biopsychosocial assessments in the Emergency Department (ED) and the wards and support patients throughout their journey in the Acute Trust whilst working closely with our colleagues in Addenbrookes Hospital.

This service operates Monday - Friday 9-5 and the post is to cover 2-days per week.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this role is to assist in the delivery of a high-quality care within the Liaison Psychiatry Service at Cambridge University Hospital NHS Trust, in keeping with the visions and values of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust. 

Providing biopsychosocial assessments and risk assessments for Older People presenting in the Emergency Department and General Wards with mental health problems

Promoting safe and effective mental health care through training and giving expert advice to clinical teams.

Maintaining a visible, professional presence where patients, carers and staff can turn for assistance, advice and support.

As part of the Liaison Psychiatry Service, to contribute to the multi-disciplinary clinical assessment and management of patients referred to the service in collaboration with other team members.

To conduct biopsychosocial and risk assessments for individuals presenting to the Emergency Department and General Wards with mental health needs.

Provide a high level of clinical expertise in the assessment and care of patients presenting with mental health problems and self-harm in collaboration with other members of the Liaison Psychiatry Service.

Ensure that care is based on the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care that identify priorities and realistic goals and involves patients, their relatives and the multidisciplinary team.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Mental Health Nurse or Mental Health Professional qualification.
  • Evidence of relevant post registration training and development.
Desirable criteria
  • Independent and supplementary Prescriber.
  • Recognised training qualification.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant years post registration experience in working with older people with mental health needs.
  • Community and in-patient nursing experience in older people’s mental health services.
  • Considerably experienced in the assessment and management of clinical risk.
  • Considerable experience of working with people with dementia.
  • Experience in the planning and delivery of training and practice developments to staff.
  • Evidence of ability to drive for results.
  • Evidence of experience in service evaluation and improvements.
  • Project management.
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical audits and research.
  • General Nursing experience with older people.

Skills & Abilities

  • Up to date knowledge of appropriate assessment scales.
  • Good Knowledge of the policies and guidelines pertinent to the planning and delivery of care to older people with mental health needs.
  • Knowledge of service improvement models and its application.
  • Awareness of the impact of the health economies on service planning and delivery.
  • Knowledge of planning and delivering meaningful activities pertinent to an in-patient setting.
  • Knowledge of the recovery principles and its application to older people.
