Are you an experienced cancer services nurse who is passionate about the care of Teenagers and Young Adults (TYA's) with Cancer? If so, we would like to invite you to apply for this exciting opportunity working as a TYA Clinical Nurse Specialist (TYA CNS) within the TYA Cancer support team at the Principal Treatment Centre (PTC) in Cambridge. 

We are looking for a motivated individual to join a team dedicated to improving the lives of Teenagers and Young Adults (TYA) with cancer. The TYA CNS will work with the wider Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) in CUH and regionally in collaboration with the TYA team, to ensure all TYA patients receive age-appropriate care and high quality psychosocial support.

Advise and provide clinical and psycho-social support information to our patients and their families within the TYA age range of 13 -24 years treated at CUH.

Use your knowledge of TYA cancers to assess, develop and implement holistic specialist nursing care programs, advocating for the YP, enabling them to feel well informed, supported and listened to throughout their treatment and beyond into survivorship or palliative care.

Be responsible for your own caseload of patients, working collaboratively with your colleagues, reflecting the core components of your role and the personalized care agenda, such as promoting age appropriate care, transition in and out of TYA Cancer Services, psycho-social and holistic support and implementing Holistic Needs Assessments (HNA’s) as required. 

Use your knowledge to advise and support YP and their families upon their treatment including side effects and the psycho-social impact. This knowledge will also be used in the provision of specialist education and training for your colleagues, new to TYA cancer care. 

Support patients to self-manage, lead or participate in their care delivery during treatment and as part of the TYA Nurse Led Post treatment Clinic.

  • Registered Nurse educated to Degree level or willingness to undertake.
  • Evidence of specialist training, experience, short courses in cancer/TYA care.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
  • Teaching qualification.
  • Advanced communication skills/counselling qualification or willingness to undertake.
  • Advanced clinical assessment.

  • Research Module.
  • Masters Degree.
  • Advanced Clinical Assessment Skills.
  • Post graduate qualification in TYA oncology.
  • Mental Health First Aid.
  • Grief and loss – Coaching.

Experience

  • Extensive experience in at least one of the following: - Teenagers and Young Adults with cancer. - Paediatric/Adult Oncology. - Haematology. - Palliative Care. - Accept personal accountability for own practice.
  • Experience of formal/informal teaching.
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary environment with a wide range of individuals at different levels.

  • Previous experience as TYA CNS.
  • Previous experience of Nurse Led Clinics.

Knowledge

  • Understanding of Evidence-Based practice.
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance.
  • Understanding of patient pathways, complexities and how to support the patient through the process.
