The successful applicant will join a team of 20 Consultant Ophthalmologists at an exciting time of new development and investment in the Department of Ophthalmology at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Applicants are required to be on the GMC Specialist Register with a CCT in Ophthalmology or Medical Ophthalmology (or be within six months of the expected date of award of CCT at time of interview). Full registration and a Licence to Practice with the GMC is required at the time of application. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.

The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013). Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.

Applications from job seekers who require skilled worker sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. For further information please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.

It is a requirement for skilled worker applicants, applying for entry clearance into the UK, to present a criminal record certificate from each country they have resided continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the past 10 years. Adult dependants (over 18 years old) will also be subject to this requirement.

The applicant will be mainly based in the medical retina service which has undergone rapid expansion following the introduction of anti-VEGF intravitreal therapy. There is a dedicated outpatient treatment room for intravitreal injections. There is a retinal imaging suite providing fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, ICG angiography, OCT imaging and B-scan ultrasonography.

The applicant will also provide primary care support for the corneal service working in conjunction with the emergency eye care service. The corneal service is supported by a full range of diagnostic equipment including corneal topography, anterior segment OCT and anterior segment ultrasonography.

The Department of Ophthalmology benefits from a hospital-wide electronic patient record (Epic) which makes Addenbrooke’s Hospital a digitally advanced Trust. This digital system helps to improve patient care and provides opportunities for comprehensive audit evaluations and research projects.

Addenbrooke’s Hospital also provides outstanding facilities for research with opportunities for close collaboration between medical specialties. The Cambridge Eye Research Centre (CERC) provides the research infrastructure for ophthalmology studies within the department.
