Clinical Fellow Higher (ST3-5/ST6+) in JVF ICU and NCCU

Clinical Fellow Higher (ST3-5/ST6+)

Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow Higher (ST3-5/ST6+) in Intensive Care Medicine (ICU & NCCU) at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, part of Cambridge University Hospitals.

Posts are available in both the John Farman ICU and the Neuro Critical Care Unit (NCCU) for a period of 12 months commencing from 06 August 2025. Other start dates may also become available.

The posts are part of the middle grade rota so candidates must have at least two years post-foundation experience in acute specialties which have regular contact with critically ill patients, ideally with at least 6 months at ST3 level or above.

These posts are particularly suitable for candidates considering out of program experience from their base specialty at intermediate, or advanced level of ICM training, or those requiring additional post-CCT experience in a major teaching hospital. Trainees from a Medicine, Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine or Surgery background are all equally welcome.

Main duties of the job

As well as an amazing clinical experience, opportunities exist for training/experience in other areas of interest such as management, echocardiography, bronchoscopy and education. The Intensive Care Unit is involved in a number of multi-centre research studies, as well as its own program of research, and trainees are welcome to contribute to this work.

Please note that these posts do not carry Postgraduate Dean’s approval or training recognition.

Full Registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council at time of commencement is required.

Working for our organisation

The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013). Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.

Applications from job seekers who require skilled worker sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. For further information please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.

It is a requirement for skilled worker applicants, applying for entry clearance into the UK, to present a criminal record certificate from each country they have resided continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the past 10 years. Adult dependants (over 18 years old) will also be subject to this requirement.

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is an Equal Opportunities Employer.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The John Farman ICU at Addenbrooke's Hospital is a 32 bed mixed level 2/3 ICU, with excellent multidisciplinary working.  The unit admits over 1500 patients annually including 100 liver transplants per year.  We provide Critical Care services for all specialties except neuro-intensive care, major trauma and cardio-thoracics. We achieve excellent quality and outcome measures. The Intensive Care team is also responsible for the Rapid Response Team which cares for deteriorating patients throughout the hospital; ICU middle grade doctors rotate through the RRT rota. Every trainee is allocated an educational supervisor and there is an on-going educational program.

NCCU cares for patients with traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid haemorrhage, ischemic stroke, complex multi-system trauma, and medical neurological diseases. We are closely linked with the University Department of Anaesthesia, the Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre, the East of England Major Trauma Centre, and clinical and research groups within Neurosciences, Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery, and many other groups in Cambridge. NCCU currently comprises 27 beds with surge capacity for 31 and admits around 1200 patients per year, and provides specialist neuro critical care and general intensive care facilities for trauma, neurology, stroke, and neurosurgical services, covering an expanding population of approximately 6.4 million
