Inclusive Research Manager

Job overview

The Inclusive Research Manager will be responsible for ensuring that our research opportunities are as accessible to our patients and members of the public as possible, and for supporting our campus as an inclusive place to undertake world-class life-changing health research.

 

Main duties of the job

This role will support the implementation of NIHR Cambridge Biomedical Research Centre’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy and coordinate community engagement activity in collaboration with our key partners and stakeholders. 

The post holder will manage implementation of initiatives designed to increase diversity of research trainees, staff, research participants and public contributors.

The successful candidate will work autonomously but collaboratively as a senior member of R&D and BRC PPI and communication teams locally and regionally, and lead coordination of regional efforts to increase research participation and involvement.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to Master’s degree level or equivalent in health, research, equality, diversity and inclusion or a related discipline
Desirable criteria
  • Qualification/training in EDI relating to health inequalities or research

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with underserved and historically excluded groups and communities
  • Experience of working in an equality, diversity and inclusion-related field
  • Experience of public and/or community involvement and engagement practices and activities
  • Experience of training evaluation and development
  • Developing, writing and implementation of policies
  • Experience of cross organisation collaboration and partnership working
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working across large and diverse teams and organisations
  • Experience working in an NHS, research or health charity environment
  • Experience leading public and community involvement and engagement activities

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding and knowledge of legislation and issues relating to equality, diversity and inclusion in healthcare, research and health inequalities
  • Awareness of key funders and organisations in healthcare and research, including NIHR, Healthwatch and health charities
  • Knowledge of the principles of stakeholder management
Desirable criteria
  • Awareness of national policies and trends surrounding health research, EDI and health inequalities

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Outstanding people skills, with the ability to work productively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds in different settings and circumstances, maintaining effective and appropriate relationships
  • Ability to challenge and have difficult conversations
  • Have the skills to motivate colleagues at all levels to engage and support measures to improve equality, diversity and inclusion in health research
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to organise and deliver public engagement events
  • Able to make a connection between their work and the benefit to patients and the public
  • Ability to facilitate meetings and activities with diverse groups of people, ensuring participants can be heard
