Job overview
We are looking for a dynamic expert in the field of patient safety to lead our corporate patient safety team.
This role will support the strategic and operational delivery of our patient safety strategy, including the Patient safety incident review framework (PSIRF).
This role is also responsible for the line management of the Datix team and the Lead for Human Factors role.

Main duties of the job
- To lead, manage, and develop the corporate patient safety team.
- To lead on the operation and development of the patient safety incident management policies and procedures.
- To lead on the corporate oversight of the Trust compliance with Duty of Candour requirements.
- To lead on the delivery and development of the Patient safety incident response framework (PSIRF).
- To act as the Trust’s Patient safety officer to meet the requirements of the national central alerting system (CAS).
- To lead on the delivery and evolvement of the Learning from deaths policy and procedures.
- To deliver and evolve the Datix risk management system.
- In collaboration with other experts within the Trust, lead on the design and delivery of patient safety educational programmes for the Trust
- To support governance oversight and reporting on all aspects of corporate patient safety measurement and monitoring.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Educated to Degree level.
- A relevant postgraduate qualification in patient safety science.
- Trained in appropriate investigation methodology and techniques.
- Evidence of continuous professional development relevant to this role.
- A Masters in a relevant healthcare related field (or working towards).
Desirable criteria
- Training in quality improvement
Experience
Essential criteria
- A relevant clinical background is considered essential, but evidence of experience that has developed an excellent understanding of clinical roles may be accepted as an alternative.
- Experience of leading and supporting patient safety investigations.
- Have worked in a clinical governance role at a senior level in a large and complex healthcare organisation.
- Have a demonstrable track record of improving quality and managing change.
- Experience of line managing a team.
- Experience of financial management including workforce planning
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- An excellent understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of patient safety.
- A good understanding of the national patient safety strategy, including the Patient safety incident response framework (PSIRF)
- Understanding of key workforce policies and procedures.
- An understanding of, or experience in, human factors science.
Desirable criteria
- A good understanding of the regulatory environment in which NHS Trusts operate
- Understand the NHS challenges and be able to translate these into operational changes
Skills
Essential criteria
- Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Computer skills including competence with Microsoft Office and database systems, including risk management systems e.g. Datix.
- Experience of formal and informal teaching.
- Able to work to exacting standards, maintain focus and apply rigorous attention to detail
Desirable criteria
- Trained After Action Review facilitator
