Research & Development IBD Assistant Management Accountant

Job overview

An exciting and unique opportunity has arisen to appoint R&D/IBD Assistant Management Accountant to work with the IBD Research team. Your work will involve supporting the Inflammatory Bowel Disease trials portfolio (both non-commercial and commercial) and the IBD team.

This will include invoicing for contractual clinical trial activity and funds transfers from third parties are recovered and correctly allocated to the relevant cost centres.

You will have an accounting background and able to work under pressure and to function independently and as part of a research team. You will need the capacity to manage competing demands and the ability to build and maintain working relationships with a variety of different staff. Accounting experience/ MS Office – preparing reports in Word, and using Excel for data – being able to use different formulae is essential, as well as some level of experience working in Clinical Research related areas.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 1 year in the first instance. 

Main duties of the job

The key focus of this post will be the monitoring of transactions of variances/misallocations and implementing any adjustments required to income & expenditure records together with ensuring that all contractual income from clinical trial activity and funds transfers from third parties are recovered by invoice and correctly allocated to the relevant cost centres. 

The R & D IBD Assistant Management Accountant will hold regular reviews with the Operations Lead IBD Research Services to support intelligence gathering and resolving queries. This will include the provision of information, analysis & support in interpreting their reports and collation of information to assist in the development of robust reporting.

The key skills required are those for interpreting, processing and analysing data using Microsoft Office, interrogating all the various regulatory clinical trial documents for preparation of trial costings and informing trial patient activity records and invoice generation, all of which requires a proven working knowledge of the accounting principles involved and analysis and interpretation of clinical trial documentation. This successful person must hold an excellent and proven working knowledge of Excel, Word, ORACLE and Access.

The R & D IBD Assistant Management Accountant is expected to take an active interest in the development of his/her skills, experience and career.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to A level standard or equivalent.
  • GCSE or equivalent in Higher Level Mathematics and English.
Desirable criteria
  • ECDL/ITQ Level 3 qualification or equivalent experience- able to set up spreadsheets, databases and documents.
  • Educated to Degree level with emphasis on accounting and auditing.
  • Educated to CCAB-qualified Accountant Level, or equivalent experience.
  • Clinical Research Background.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • MS Office – preparing reports in Word, and using Excel for data – being able to use different formulae.
  • Planning and prioritising your time to balance different demands and deadlines.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of working in an accounting department in a management accountant role within a large organisation.
  • Costing and project accounting experience.
  • Good working knowledge of ORACLE Fusion (Finance and Procurement)and QlikView.
  • Previous experience of Clinical Trials and costings.
  • Audit of research financial transactions to prepare reports, recharges, resolve related queries, etc.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understand the use and explain the purpose of accounting accruals and provisions.
  • Self motivated with a proactive approach to problem solving.
  • Prepared to contribute to how the department operates.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • IT and reporting skills – e.g. ability to transform complex source data into a simple report.
  • Ability to develop advanced spreadsheet skills.
  • An ability to listen to Operation Lead, budget holders, senior managers and to respond to questions or requests for information in a way which non-financial staff will understand and can interpret.
  • Good oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with both non-finance and finance staff.
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with staff at all levels within the organisation.
  • Able to carry out work with the required attention to detail in a busy financial management department.
  • Able to concentrate and focus on a range of issues particularly during the monthly reporting cycle.
