We have an excellent opportunity for an Orthoptist to join our Orthoptic Department at Addenbrooke's Hospital. We welcome an experienced Orthoptist or newly qualified Orthoptists who wish to develop their skills and knowledge in Orthoptics and Ophthalmology.
A newly-qualified Orthoptist would start at Band 5 and progress to a Band 6 role upon successful training.
Addenbrooke’s Hospital is a large teaching hospital and a research centre with strong affiliations with Cambridge University. It has a rich history of breaking the barriers of modern medicine and providing compassionate care for the patients.
You will have a varied and interesting workload with the opportunity to work alongside ophthalmologists who are experts in their field including strabismus, Paediatric Ophthalmology, Neuro-ophthalmology and more.
We provide a clear pathway for career progression and plenty of opportunities to gain experience in extended roles, with a good level of training and mentoring provided.
Main duties of the job
- Provide timely Paediatric and Adult Orthoptic Services at Addenbrooke’s NHS Trust and off site Community Services, including specialist Orthoptic Services.
- Participate in extended orthoptic clinical roles.
- Personally deliver clinical supervision and instruction to Orthoptists, undergraduate Orthoptists and other healthcare professionals.
- Contribute to departmental teaching, research and audit.
- Ensure that the policies and procedures of the Department of Orthoptics and Addenbrooke’s NHS Trust are adhered to.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Orthoptic qualification recognised for State Registration (Diploma or Degree)
- State registration with the HCPC
Desirable criteria
- Recognised clinical teaching qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of orthoptic assessment of children and adults
- Experience of Humphrey visual fields including visual field interpretation
- Experience of Orthoptic-optom led Clinics and Community Clinics
Desirable criteria
- Experience of clinical supervision and assessment of students
- Participation in Paediatric Ophthalmology related extended role
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Evidence of good Orthoptic knowledge relating to management of complex ocular motility and assessment of children and adults
- Good awareness of Health and Safety issues relating to the delivery of services off site
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrate an understanding of clinical governance
- Demonstrate an understanding of Trust policies and procedures
Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to maintain clear and accurate patient records
- Demonstrates evidence of ability to educate others
- Able and willing to undertake Ophthalmic training / ophthalmic course
Desirable criteria
- Self-motivated
- Demonstrate initiative
- Excellent administrative skills
