Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Locum Specialist Grade in Cardiology for a period of 6 months at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.

The aim is to optimise quality of patient care, improve patient experience, reduce length of stay and reduce readmission rates. The post will be suited to someone experienced in looking after patients presenting with acute cardiac disorders and with a broad experience of Cardiology Outpatient clinics.

Main duties of the job

The department delivers a General Cardiology service within a large teaching hospital, supported by specialist services at Royal Papworth Hospital. Addenbrooke’s Hospital has a ward-based system, with 31 beds dedicated to Cardiology, managed by a consultant and junior team. There are many cardiology consult requests throughout the hospital and the successful applicant will primarily oversee delivery of the consults service, supported by StRs, with the aim of ensuring that patients admitted with cardiac disorders but not admitted to the Cardiac Ward are seen promptly, treated optimally, discharged or transferred without delay and are followed up.

The post-holder will also deliver Advice & Guidance to local GPs, ensuring good communication with primary care. Alongside this post, a separate Inpatient Heart Failure service is in development. The post-holder will contribute to Cardiology outpatient clinics, including triage of referrals.

There is no on-call or General Medicine commitment.

You will have completed a minimum of 12 years’ medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which a minimum of six years should have been in Cardiology in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades. Equivalent years’ experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted.

The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013). Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.

Full Registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council at time of application is required.
