Main duties of the job

At an organisational level, we are keen to embrace technology and the digital agenda to enhance working practices and have a well established electronic patient record which incorporates a full electronic prescribing and medicines administration system.

At a departmental level, we have been fortunate to receive significant investment in recent years, which in addition to growing our team, has led to a major departmental refurbishment, the replacement of our Pharmacy Robot, the creation of a new Pharmacy and Aseptic Unit in the Cancer Centre, and the opening of a new Outpatient Pharmacy.

Our services are evolving to provide our Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians with more time to work alongside patients while supporting our medical and nursing colleagues. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will join our team in a Band 6 role and following the successful completion of your probationary period you will agree a number of objectives with your line manager and the Pharmacy Education Team which you will need to achieve in order to progress into a Band 7 role; these objectives will include both workplace tasks and self-directed learning with a suitable academic education programme.  

You will become part of a growing team of Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians who support patient care across a wide range of clinical specialties within the Trust. With the support of our Specialist Clinical Pharmacists and our Principal Pharmacists across a range of clinical specialities, you will deliver high-quality, patient-centred care.

In addition to delivering ward-based pharmaceutical care and providing clinical support to the dispensary, you will have the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of medicines optimisation and medicines safety activities as part of your wider medicines management role.

This role is crucial to the delivery, development, and evaluation of pharmaceutical services across the hospital. It plays a key part in helping divisions optimise medicines use within available resources.

Our standard working hours now consist of four long days (8 am to 6.30 pm) per week; Saturdays, Sundays, and Bank Holidays are worked on a rota basis. After a period of induction and training, you will contribute to the pharmacy out-of-hours service.

Trust Responsibilities

 

·         To support the effective and safe use of medicines within the CSUs, in line with agreed Trust priorities, and in line with pharmacy’s activities to optimise medicines management across the Trust and at the interfaces with primary and tertiary care.

 

·         To be part of the Pharmacy team and work with staff within the pharmacy department and across the Trust, to enable the objectives of the Trust to be achieved.

 

Professional Responsibilities

 

·        To deliver safe, effective and efficient clinical pharmacy services; to contribute appropriately to the training and development of staff in pharmacy and within the CSUs to promote safer medicines use in line with Trust priorities.

 

·        To assist the Principal Pharmacists in all medicines related matters which reflect the needs of the services and the Trust; to support the Principal Pharmacist to deliver their full portfolio to meet the overall needs of the Trust.

 

Clinical Practice Role

 

·       To practice in compliance with the General Pharmaceutical Council code of professional conduct within the scope of practice, being responsible and accountable for own decisions, actions and omissions.

 

·        To demonstrate a critical understanding of broadened level of responsibility and autonomy and within the limits of own competence and professional scope of practice, including when working with complexity, risk, uncertainty and incomplete information.

Operational

 

·        To contribute to the day to day pharmacy activities and be part of the team providing dispensary, Saturday and Bank Holidays rota service cover and provide an on call service in line with the On-Call Procedure.

 

·  To participate in clinical screening & accuracy checking within the dispensary

 

Human Resource Management

           

·        Specialist Pharmacists (band7) do not have line management responsibility for any staff.  However, all posts with responsibility for managing and supporting staff in operational delivery are expected to lead, motivate, develop and reward staff and are required to comply with the Trust's Policies and Manager's Code of Conduct e.g. in the following areas:

Education and Training

 

·         To contribute to the development of training packages for junior staff undertaking rotations; to support the Principal Pharmacists in their roles in training and education.

 

·         To contribute to the clinical training and assessment of rotational pharmacists and pharmacy technicians and pre-registration pharmacist trainees

 

Development and Planning

 

·         To contribute to the planning and future development of all aspects pharmacy services at Milton Keynes University Hospital

 

·   To support the agreed strategy, aims and objectives for provision of pharmacy services liaising with both pharmacy and directorate teams

Qualifications and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • B.Sc./B.Pharm./M.Pharm
  • Registered with GPhC
  • Evidence of on-going CPD (in line with GPhC requirements)
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy (or equivalent)
  • Member of RPS

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide patient care
  • Knowledge of the medical management of disease in a range of the specialties
Desirable criteria
  • Post registration experience in a hospital-based clinical pharmacy post
  • Experience of clinical audit work.
  • An awareness of current national standards, guidelines and service delivery issues.
  • Experience of Medicines Information.
  • Evidence of influencing medicines use to optimise care and help clinicians manage expenditure
  • Evidence of experience managing prioritisation in relation to the use of new drugs and new uses for drugs
  • Evidence of significant contribution to innovative or developmental roles and activities within pharmacy
