We are a rapidly growing service, having recently won our tender bid, and are committed to providing exceptional diabetic eye screening across the Bedford Luton and Milton Keynes region (BLMK). Location:
The primary location for this role is Milton Keynes Hospital, with travel required to surrounding areas to deliver community-based screening services.
Main duties of the job
To provide a high quality screening as part of the Diabetic Eye Screening
Role and Responsibilities:
As a Diabetic Eye Screener, your key responsibilities will include:
Diabetic Eye Screening: Conducting diabetic eye screening to assess and monitor retinal health in patients with diabetes.
Community Outreach: Traveling around the Milton Keynes area to deliver community screening services, making diabetic eye screening more accessible to patients.
Candidate Requirements:
Experience: Adequate experience working with eyes i.e Ophthalmology, Opticians etc, with the capability to run your own clinics.
Skills: Organise own workload, excellent time management, and a solid understanding of NHS England policies and guidelines.
Patient Engagement: Encourage and educate the importance of Diabetic Eye Screening.
Programme for Milton Keynes, part of Bedford, Luton and Milton Keynes (BLMK), against National Service Framework and National Quality Assurance Standards, to ensure the early detection of sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy and the reduction of blindness.
To support the activities of the department to ensure that National Quality Standards and the Key Performance Indicators and other targets are met.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
· To maintain harmonious working relationships and efficient communication.
· Clinical work will involve exchanging complex or sensitive clinical information, for example about a patient’s condition
· Frequently there will be barriers to understanding, for when dealing with patients or relatives who may be elderly or hearing impaired, who have learning difficulties, or whose first language is not English. At times, patients and relatives may be angry or upset, for example when they have been given unexpected bad news.
· Triaging of images will require the postholder to exercise independent clinical decision making in assessing a range of clinical factors and provide opinion that contributes to the treatment or education of diabetic patients.
· To remain calm and focused during screening clinics, especially adverse conditions such as IT or camera failure.
· To communicate effectively with health professionals and patients, sometimes in distressing and sensitive circumstances.
· You will be required to drive with a full UK driving license, using your own vehicle, to a range of clinic locations across Milton Keynes.
· The post holder will be responsible for planning, organising and setting up their community clinics.

Qualifications and knowledge
Essential criteria
- 5 GCSE’s or equivalent, including maths and English.
- To have or willing to work towards Level 3 Diploma in Diabetic Eye Screening or equivalent.
- Have knowledge of Diabetes/Ophthalmology and display a genuine interest in Diabetic Retinal Screening.
Desirable criteria
- Use Microsoft Windows, Office Word, Outlook and other windows based software.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in handling and using technical equipment.
- Experience of working with eyes i.e Ophthalmology, Opticians etc
Desirable criteria
- Working knowledge of the Diabetic Eye Screening Programme
- NHS experience
- Previous knowledge of instilling eye drops, visual acuities and imaging of the eye
