Dietitian - Surgical & Gastro Specialist

 

Department: Nutrition & Dietetics

 

Full-time: Band 6 £37,338 - £44,962 per annum

 

Hours: 37.5 hours per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

 

We are looking for an enthusiastic dietitian to join our acute team as a band 6 gastro-surgical dietitian. The post is suitable for an experienced band 5 or band 6 looking to widen their skills and experience. You will be working with inpatients and covering a gastro outpatient clinic.  

Previous experience of nutrition support and enteral feeding is essential. Experience of parenteral nutrition is beneficial but not essential, provided appropriate transferable skills can be demonstrated.  

We provide CPD opportunities with previous post holders attending PENG, St Marks, and the low FODMAP course. Regular supervision with experienced dietitians working across several areas is also available. We have a dedicated Therapy Practice Education team to support staff development. 

You will join a department of over 30 registered dietitians, dietetic support workers and admin staff. We have excellent secretarial and dietetic assistant support and take students from Surrey and Coventry Universities. On site accommodation is usually available

Main duties of the job

  • To provide, as part of the acute adult dietetic team, dietetic services for adult inpatients and outpatients.
  • The postholder will be an autonomous practitioner and act as a source of expertise in the area of gastroenterology and surgery, and will also be required to support dietitians providing dietetic care for inpatients with a variety of medical conditions

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You should have excellent clinical and communication skills, demonstrate flexibility, manage time effectively, and be committed to teamwork. The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary team to provide holistic patient-centred care. 

Clinical:

  • To develop and maintain a high standard of knowledge and practical experience in general dietetics, and to provide specialist expertise in areas as gastroenterology, and surgery.
  • To manage a highly diverse caseload 

Leadership:

  • To assist, support and supervise junior dietitians, dietetic assistants and students contributing to their professional development including appraisal and personal development plans.

Education: 

  • To recognise the need for continuous professional development. Within the performance system and in discussion with the team leader, the post holder will be responsible of identifying and attending their own training and professional development needs.

Clinical governance:

  • To access, critically appraise and use best practice/evidence-based information to contribute to the production and review of clinical guidelines, and to inform care pathways for patients.

Organisational/administrative responsibilities:

  • To keep accurate and timely electronic notes for patients. These will be completed within the guidelines of the organisation and professional body, ensuring legibility and accessibility.

Responsibilities for resources:

  • To evaluate service user information in line with current evidence and produce new information as required.

Communication: 

  • To communicate with patients, carers, and other healthcare professionals across the local healthcare environment.

General:

  • To assist in the identification of problems where changes to practices and systems or additional resources are required to support caseload and to discuss these with line manager.

Qualifications and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Degree or equivalent in Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Registration as a dietitian with the Health and Care Professions Council HCPC (UK)
  • Documentary evidence of a range of continuous professional development (CPD)
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and awareness of national guidelines relevant to clinical area
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of evidenced based clinical practice for a range of conditions.
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of the British Dietetic Association
  • Sound therapeutic and clinical knowledge

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post –registration experience in a range of dietetic clinical areas.
  • Ability to autonomously manage a caseload of complex patients.
  • Experience of giving advice to surgical and patients with gastrointestinal disease
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in devising enteral and parenteral feeding plans.
  • Supervision and training of students and junior members of staff

Skills

  • High level of written and verbal communication skills including report writing
