Job overview
You should be able to provide a comprehensive and quality medical secretarial service to a team of Consultant Oncologists and associated supporting clinical staff, supporting the efficiency of front-line services.
Co-ordinate clinic management, manage and prioritise workload, liaising closely with other medical secretaries within the department and allied services.
Co-ordinate referrals and new appointments and liaising sensitively with patients. Providing first point of contact to the Consultants office, requiring emotional resilience for the sensitive nature of the department and organisational skills needed to co-ordinate visiting consultant workload.
To be the named point of contact when colleagues are on leave.
Main duties of the job
- Organising consultant clinics
- Word processing and audio typing
- Patient - consultant liaison
- Sort incoming postal and electronic mail
- Communicate with external trusts for patient care
- Cover for colleagues annual leave
- Various office duties (photocopying, printing, answering telephone calls etc)
- NEW - ability to work efficiently from the office, or from home.

Essential criteria
- Educated to English GCSE or equivalent.
- RSA typing qualification or proven experience
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of medical terminology is highly desirable (AMSPAR).
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of secretarial/administrative work.
- Experience of word processing and audio-typing.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of customer care to provide sensitive and professional service to patients and colleagues, both internal and external.
- Experience of managing a discrete body of work to ensure timescales are met.
- Experience of working within the NHS/GP Practice.
Skills, Abilities & knowledge
Essential criteria
- Excellent keyboard skills are required to ensure provision of an efficient and accurate service to patients and medical staff.
- Medical Terminology knowledge would be an advantage.
- Clear and concise verbal communication to ensure accuracy of information being required or transferred.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet timescales.
- Able to work on own initiative and as part of team to ensure cross cover of all aspects of work are covered.
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of Trust systems for the day-to-day administration.
