Buckinghamshire Health Care Trust is inviting applications from enthusiastic and motivated clinicians to join our expanding Glaucoma team.

About the role:

This is an exciting new role created to support and grow our glaucoma service as it faces the challenges of increasing demand. You will work alongside consultants in patient facing and virtual Glaucoma clinics.

Working closely with the multi-professional Glaucoma team, delivering outpatient services , you will also liaise with other services within the Ophthalmology department. 

About you:

You are a highly skilled clinician with a commitment to professional and personal development and an enthusiasm for delivering excellent Glaucoma care.  You have good clinical experience in Glaucoma which will enable you to work  collaboratively in order to deliver excellent care .  Your highly developed specialist knowledge has been evidenced by professional certification in Glaucoma, which you are actively working towards gaining if you’ve not already completed.

 We are a long established and expanding Ophthalmology department. We work collaboratively with our multi professional team to provide a high level of care for our patients across the county. We strive to provide good working environments and offer flexible working arrangements to maximise job satisfaction.

Clinics are located at Stoke Mandeville, Amersham and High Wycombe Hospitals. 

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

To undertake assessments of patients who suffer with Glaucoma or ocular hypertension in outpatient clinics. This includes history taking, adherence to drug regimes, intra-ocular pressures measurements using GAT, assessment of the optic nerve head using a volk lens, interpretation of visual fields and OCT and making a decision on management with the support of a consultant ophthalmologist and multidisciplinary team.

To practice within agreed protocols for both department and sub-specialist clinical areas as agreed with Service Leads.
To implement policies in own area of work and to indicate to the lead clinicians and management any improvements that can be made to the running of the sub-specialist service.

Qualifications

  • BSc Hons Optometry or equivalent or Batchelor’s Degree in nursing, health or management related studies or BSc in Orthoptics
  • Masters level qualification/ Prof Cert in glaucoma or in progress or equivalent experience
  • Registration with the General Optical Council as an Optometrist or First level registered Nurse or Registration with HCPC
  • Relevant masters (or higher) level postgraduate qualification(s) or clinical research experience relevant to sub-specialist practice

Experience

  • Highly developed and proven specialist knowledge, at Masters level or above, across multiple areas of specialist clinical practice
  • Multidisciplinary team working
  • Previous hospital eye service experience
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills; ability to communicate complex, sensitive and potentially conflicting information to patients and other stakeholders in an appropriate manner independent of their level of understanding
  • Ability to empathise regarding loss of sight and prognoses including blindness and threats to general health from systemic disease with ocular/visual manifestations
  • Able to work within a multidisciplinary team & gain credibility and a good rapport with all staff
  • Specialist clinical assessment skills for patients with active and sight-threatening disease in specific areas of clinical practice
  • Specialist ancillary test interpretation skills (e.g. visual function and ocular imaging tests) as used by specialist medical staff
  • Able to reach decisions regarding management of sight threatening disease when guided by knowledge of principles of sub-specialist clinical care and care provision algorithms
