Job overview
Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust mortuary team, based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital site, are looking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic Anatomical Pathology Mortuary Assistant to join our busy friendly Mortuary Team.
Exceptional patient care to our deceased and their families is of paramount importance to our team and we would expect the same from all staff.
This is a fixed term post for 18months with the possibility of a future substantial post.
Training provided inhouse.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will contribute to provision of a high quality diagnostic pathology service for Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and will work within clearly defined protocol and procedures, adhering to all Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust policies e.g. Health and Safety, Data Protection and Confidentiality, Equality & Diversity. The post holder will work under supervision from the APTs.
Within this “scope and range” the post holder is responsible for contributing to the delivery of a high-quality histopathology and mortuary service and for ensuring that they make the best use of all resources available to them, and maintenance of an environment that is safe and conducive to best working practice and adhere to HTA regulations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will:
Assist the Anatomical Pathology Technicians (APTs) in the running of a safe, secure, effective and comprehensive mortuary service for the needs of Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and the wider community
Will act as a Mortuary Assistant at Stoke Mandeville Hospital Mortuary with provision to attend Wycombe Hospital storage facility when required.
Dealing with the receipt, removal and transfer of deceased
Assisting with enquiries from undertakers and the coroners office
Prepare deceased for identification and/or viewing, prepare deceased for post mortem.
Paperwork and release of deceased to undertakers
Maintenance of accurate records including the mortuary register and relevant computer systems
Ensure the mortuary environment is kept safe and hygienic at all times assist with cleaning schedule of both PM room and storage facility.
Ensure stock replenishment and rotation
Assist with the preparation, labelling and recording of tissue being transferred to the laboratory for further analysis ensuring there is a clear audit trail of such samples

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE
Essential criteria
- Good written and verbal communication skills to enable liaison with hospital staff and to ensure accurate records
- Ability to deal with the physical and emotional aspects of mortuary work (e.g. road traffic accidents and forensic investigations
- Methodical approach to work with strict attention to detail.
- Courteous telephone manner and ability to deal sensitively with enquiries from distressed relatives
- Able to work as part of a team
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING
Essential criteria
- Qualifications to GCSE level.
EXPERIENCE
Desirable criteria
- Some previous mortuary experience helpful but not necessary.
- Awareness of the requirements of different faiths
SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES
Essential criteria
- Ability to travel between Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville sites.
