Job overview

This post is an FY2 grade post to support the junior doctor and consultant team. This post will take part in Emergency Medicine at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. This post will provide excellent experience in Emergency Medicine.

The post holder will work as part of the junior tier (FY2/CT1 / CT2 level) and will take part in a full shift rota pattern. The pattern of work is compliant with the European Working Time Directive and will be compliant with the Junior Doctors Contract. There is a middle grade doctor on the shop-floor throughout the 24 hour period and consultant presence 16 hours a day. The post holder will be expected to work as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team providing direct clinical care.

Main duties of the job

The Emergency Department (ED) is at the centre of the acute work of all Trusts. Emergency Medicine specialists are responsible for assessing and resuscitating patients with serious illness and injuries before their transfer to hospital wards or operating theatres. Other patients are assessed, treated and sent home for follow up and ongoing care with their General Practitioner.

Typical duties may include:

  1. Resuscitation and initial management of emergency cases in a team.
  2. Management of other patients presenting to the ED
  3. Admission of patients to inpatient teams for further management.
  4. Admission of patients to the AOU, their ongoing management, discharge and referral when necessary.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Foundation Programme 1 Completed
  • Registration with the GMC & Licence to practice
Desirable criteria
  • ALS Certificate
  • MRCP Part 1 or FRCEM Primary (Desirable)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of good written and oral communication skills including presentation skills
  • Knowledge of the principles of patient confidentiality and data protection.
Desirable criteria
  • 6 month general professional experience at SHO level in UK

Maintaining Clinical Competence
