Job overview
A Part Time Medical Secretary/Team Administrator for our Community Ophthalmology service to be based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital to provide a comprehensive and quality medical secretarial service to consultants and their teams. This is a permanent part time position within the department.
You will provide administrative support as well as be involved in the day to day work for the consultants. You should be enthusiastic, motivated and have good organisational and communication skills. Excellent computer and audio-typing skills are also required.
Main duties of the job
The Community Ophthalmology is currently looking to recruit a part time Medical Secretary at a Band 4.
Your main responsibilities will be to provide a confidential office management service and medical secretarial service to the Consultants and other medical staff within the Department.
The successful candidate will have proven typing experience, previous NHS experience in a similar setting, excellent medical secretarial skills and will be familiar with Trust systems, such as Careflow.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING
Essential criteria
- GCSE Grade C or above/equivalent in English Language
- RSA II Typing, or equivalent
- Medical terminology knowledge (AMSPAR), or ability to demonstrate equivalent ability
EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria
- Experience of working as a Medical Secretary and working within The NHS/GP Practice
- Experience of working at a senior secretarial level
- Experience of word processing and audio typing
- Ability to work with highly confidential data, and to maintain patient confidentiality
Desirable criteria
- Experience of Minute taking
SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office products
- Excellent written and telephone communication skills, to enable liaison with staff at all levels
- Ability to organize and prioritise busy workload
- Knowledge of Data Protection Act, 1998 and other Trust Policies and Procedures
- Knowledge of Trust Information Systems, e.g. CRS
Desirable criteria
- Able, and happy, to work as part of a team
- Ability to cover the duties of other secretarial staff within the department
Special Circumstances
Essential criteria
- Ability to work at all sites within The Trust should the need arise
Applicant requirements
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
