Job overview

The Healthcare Support Worker is a member of the direct care team who supports practitioners to meet patient needs. The Healthcare Support Worker (Healthcare Support Worker) is responsible for providing care and therapy to patients as delegated by the Registered Nurse and directed by the appropriate team leader.

A Healthcare Support Worker will be expected to undertake a range of duties with direct supervision and will be required to report back on those delegated duties to a Registered Nurse.

The Healthcare Support Worker will be competent to provide compassionate care to agreed quality standards. Healthcare Support Worker roles will continue to develop through the development of further skills, knowledge and competencies that will be determined within the clinical teams through assessment.

Main duties of the job

·         Practice safe standards or care to patients following UHBW guidelines and policies and within the scope of the Healthcare Support Worker role.

·         Participate in patient assessment (with supervision) to deliver high standards of care.

·         Practice area specific competencies as identified by clinical area.

·         Under supervision follow individual patient care plans, and report any changes immediately to the Registered Nurse

·         Work effectively as part of a team.

·         Actively promote self-care and independence to enable timely discharge.

·         Help individuals to maintain mobility and rehabilitation goals.

·         Maintain effective communication with patients, relatives and members of the Multidisciplinary team regarding all aspects of care demonstrating a range of appropriate communication skills.

·         Maintain clear, concise patient records and documentation adhering to national standards and Trust policies and procedures.

·         Obtain consent prior to giving care in accordance with Trust policies.

·         Provide information to other members of the Multi-disciplinary team on the care provided.

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • Level 2 QCF Diploma in Clinical Healthcare support/ Level 2 NVQ in Healthcare/Health & Social Care
  • GCSE A*- D in English Language or equivalent (e.g. Certificate in Adult Literacy at Level 1) and GCSE A* - D or equivalent in Mathematics (e.g. Certificate in Adult Numeracy at Level 1)

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Good communication skills both written and verbal
  • Able to complete appropriate documentation accurately
  • Demonstrate an awareness of healthcare work and policies and procedures
  • Committed to providing high quality patient care
  • IT skills, basic word, Email, keyboard skills
  • Ability and willingness to undertake appropriate training
  • Flexible and adaptable to change, able to work a range of shifts and moving across wards/unit dependant on clinical need
  • Able to demonstrate calm, caring patient manner/attitude
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to working within the healthcare setting
  • Able to meet the physical and educational demands of the role

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • 6 months experience of working in a health care setting within the last 12 months
  • Be able to work as a member of a team
  • Experience of time management skills and prioritising work
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of venepuncture and recording ECGs
  • Experience of working in an acute setting
