We provide specialist assessment, diagnosis and management for children presenting with a range of conditions including complex neuro-disability, neurodevelopmental issues such as ADHD and autism and delayed development. We also provide services to support multi-agency decision making and medical input for children with identified safeguarding concerns, Children in Care and Adoption. You will work closely with our extensive multi-disciplinary teams including Specialist nurses, Therapists, Psychologists and Speciality and Specialist Doctors.

The successful applicant will develop their expertise to help develop and meet current and future challenges.

Our service has an excellent reputation for training, we have close links with the University of Bristol Medical School and you will have opportunities through the wider educational opportunities the service provides.

The post is due to commence from September 2024, though this may have some flexibility. As one of a team of 20 Consultants, 4 specialty doctors and 1 associate doctor across Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.

You will be a member of the multi-disciplinary locality team working with children in a specific locality.  This will include junior medical staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, clinical psychologist and specialist nurses. 

You will be responsible for the clinical management of patients, under supervision from consultant colleagues.

Child Protection On-call

You will be part of a daytime rota for clinical assessment and investigation of children suspected of being abused, supervised by the Consultant Community Pediatrician undertaking work in child protection across BNSSG.  You will contribute to inter-agency working for child protection in Bristol and South Glos and may participate in multi-disciplinary and multi-agency child protection training.

Disability and Special Educational Needs

You will be a member of the Child Development Team and will provide a service for the assessment and the investigation of children with sensory, motor and intellectual impairments.  You will  supervise the management of children with chronic impairments and disabilities including regular reviews and statutory assessments.  This work will be undertaken in clinics and settings across the locality independently under supervision of the Consultant Community Pediatricians.

Secondary Assessment

You will see referrals for community paediatric assessment from primary care, the neonatal team, therapists, and hospital-based colleagues, and from colleagues in CYPS. Children are seen in outpatient clinics in a variety of settings.

Clinical Governance

You will be required to take part in Clinical Governance to include audit and quality improvement, in line with revalidation requirements to provide evidence of service development. Sirona has an audit function which supports and monitors such activity.

Experience

  • Significant postgraduate training with experience in relevant post for this position
  • Experience in multidisciplinary working/team working
  • Willingness and enthusiasm to undertake teaching of medical under-graduates & postgraduates
  • Understanding of management issues including medical discipline, clinical governance, service planning
  • Resilient, able to manage a diverse range of demands and respond quickly to changes
  • Understanding the needs of children and young people with a range of vulnerabilities
  • Competence in General Paediatrics to a level appropriate to experience
  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent). Knowledge of how community working differs from hospital working.
  • Strong verbal and written skills
  • Able to engage with and communicate clearly with a wide range people, notably children, young people and their families
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Understanding of management issues including medical discipline, clinical governance, service planningrience in audit project and written up
  • Experience in audit project and written up
  • Willingness to participate in service development
  • Participation in research
  • Strong commitment to patient care: Passionate about delivering the best and encouraging others to do the same
  • Must be willing and able to meet the travel requirements of the post.

  • Conducting research or audit
  • Formal training in teaching or research methods
  • Ability to teach effectively.
  • Evidence of relevant publications in peer reviewed journals.
