Job overview

Mealtimes volunteer on adult wards

This role is available at Weston General Hospital

Volunteers support a variety of wards, particularly those with older patients who require additional support at mealtimes, including encouragement to eat, cutting up food, and for some support with feeding. We are looking for Volunteers who are comfortable supporting patients in a ward environment.

 

Main duties of the job

  • Encouraging patients to eat, opening packets and pouring drinks, and helping patients to remain independent at mealtimes.
  • Feeding patients when appropriate and as directed by senior nursing staff.
  • Providing companionship to patients, particularly older patients and those with a dementia or cognitive impairment.
  • Tidying bedside tables and offering hand wipes in preparation for the meal.
  • Following staff direction, delivering meals to patients and clearing tables afterwards.
  • Following meal time protocols.
  • Completing patient food record charts.
  • Engaging in conversation with patients, building rapport to support eating and drinking.
