The successful applicant will join the NBT Neurosurgery and Spine team in a fixed term capacity for a period of 12 months.
The Spine team at NBT is collaborative team consisting of 5 Neurosurgical and 5 Orthopaedic background Spinal surgeons: providing a Regional complex spinal service, treating a wide aspect of all spinal conditions elective and trauma including spinal deformity, and intradural conditions.
The successful applicant will participate in a Spinal on call 1 in 10 weeks based at Southmead Hospital, and at times may be asked to support the Neurosurgical Paediatric colleagues at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.
The postholder will be responsible for the management of complex spinal conditions under their care. The successful candidate must liaise with consultant colleagues regarding the continuity of care of when the postholder is absent.

North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) wishes to appoint a fellowship trained Consultant Spinal surgeon. This post is a full time 10 PA position.
The successful applicant must hold the FRCS (Tr+Orth), or FRCS (Neurosurgery) or equivalent.
They should maintain full registration with the GMC. They must have CCT in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery or Neurosurgery and have been entered on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of the appointment.
It is essential for the successful candidate to have at least 2 years of fellowship experience in complex spinal conditions.
The successful candidate will be employed under Terms & Conditions of Service for Consultants (England) 2003. The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential.
Desirable qualifications include:
1. Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS).
2. Demonstration of their ability to carry out independently and competently complex spinal upper cervical spine surgery.
3. Training in intradural spinal conditions.
4. Training in spinal dysraphism.

With over 20 surgeons and over 700 members of staff, we provide a complete Neurosurgery and Spines trauma service with over 600 severely injured patients each year as well as an extensive service in Spine Surgery treating a wide range of spinal conditions paediatric and adult . Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career, ability to demonstrate experience in audit and quality improvement projects is essential.
Completion of a general management course or programme and demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management are desirable.
Proven teaching ability and proven involvement in research, and evidence of relevant publications in peer reviewed journals is required.
Satisfactory written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate with patients, colleagues, and staff at all levels is essential.
They must demonstrate knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues, and knowledge of political context within which we operate.
They must demonstrate an ability to lead a team and form effective working relationships within a team.
They must be able to inspire, motivate and develop junior medical staff, and be able to work independently as well as part of the NMSK Directorate and to show that they can balance individual requirements against those of the Directorate and Trust as a whole.

- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: - CCT or CESR (CP) - proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview - CESR - European Community Rights Maintain. Must be on GMC Specialist Register at time of the appointment or, if a Specialist Registrar (SpR) in training, must be within six months of completion of CCT at time of interview. Specialist registrars that do not hold a CCT must be due to be awarded one within 6 months of the interview date

Training and Experience

- Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
- Post-CCT Fellowship/Consultant experience in Spines
- Minimum of seven years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training, three years as a Senior Registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential.
