To act as one of several  medical physics experts in diagnostic radiology to 3 acute trusts

Consultant Physicist role as part of a medium sized radiation safety service.

Provision of safety, optimisation, quality assurance and legal advice and services to customers 

To  manage staff within the radiation safety section and act as part of wider departmental physics team

To provide training to trainees within section and a wide variety of customer staff

Swydd ddisgrifiad a phrif gyfrifoldebau manwl

To deputise for the Consultant Physicist (Imaging) in his absence and to cover his responsibilities for the services and advice provided by the department, 

To plan and direct the scientific and technical work of the Diagnostic Imaging Physics Section. 

To be responsible for the line management of staff within the Diagnostic Imaging Physics Section. 

 To provide a radiation protection service for the Trust, including the legal responsibilities of RPA. The service includes provision of advice on legislative requirements, provision of advice on all physics aspects of diagnostic imaging, risk assessments, room shielding calculations, drafting radiation protection policies and working procedures and investigating incidents of overexposure. 

To provide statutory Medical Physics Expert (MPE) services for diagnostic radiology in compliance with the requirements of IRMER in respect of diagnostic reference levels, research dose constraints and radiation incident investigations. 

To provide high quality professional, scientific and technical expertise and support to ensure the safe, accurate and effective use of ionising and non-ionising radiation. 

To Interpret radiation protection legislation and advise employers on the implications of current and proposed regulations. 

To liaise with enforcing authority’s inspectors on Trust Compliance with legislation relating to ionising radiations. 

To review on going compliance with radiation protection legislation and to provide appropriate reports on these issues to senior management. 

To be a leading member of the Trust’s radiation protection committee, providing reports and proposals on radiation protection.  

To draft Local Rules, policies and procedures for departments within the Trust and its customers and to regularly review and update in line with current operating procedures within the departments.  

To formulate standard operating procedures for radiation protection and quality assurance tests on all ionising and non-ionising radiation equipment within the premises of the Trust and its customers. 

To provide scientific advice and assistance in the specification, assessment and procurement of diagnostic equipment including all x-radiographic, ultrasound and laser equipment (To include writing of specifications, tender evaluation and final selection). 

To be responsible for calculating radiation shielding for new installations in line with statutory requirements for patient and staff safety and advising on the adequacy of existing shielding, including liaison with architects on site plans and appropriate cost effective shielding material. 

To provide prior risk assessments for new activities and facilities that involve the use of ionising radiations and to develop contingency plans as identified in these assessments. 

To carry out critical examinations of new equipment. 

To be responsible for acceptance testing and quality assurance of diagnostic equipment, including all x-radiographic, ultrasound and laser equipment, both within the Trust and for external contracts. 

To carry out on going risk assessments on procedures, equipment and facilities associated with diagnostic procedures involving either ionising or non-ionising radiation. 

To lead the development and monitoring of radiation dose reduction procedures and the optimisation of image quality in diagnostic radiology, undertaking an ongoing program of radiation dose assessment, audit and optimization. 

To provide individual patient radiation dose as required e.g. for patients undergoing a procedure during pregnancy or in the advent of an accidental exposure. 

To lead in the investigation of suspected incidents of radiation overexposure to patients, staff or members of the public including reporting to appropriate external agencies. 

 To be responsible for the quality assurance measurements and calibration of diagnostic equipment, including all x-radiographic, ultrasound and laser equipment both within and outside the Trust. 

To be responsible for field measurements of ionising radiation dose levels and on site measurements of the radiation attenuation properties of the building materials used in the construction of both new and existing facilities. 

To provide analysis and interpretation of highly complex diagnostic tests and report findings to clinical, managerial and other technical staff. 

To create software tools for data analysis of quality assurance tests and patient dose audit 

To develop and implement long term plans for/changes in service delivery to the trust as required by the Consultant Physicist (Head of Imaging Section) and to develop new services both for the trust and other sites, as per contracts. 

To assist in the preparation of service level agreements and contracts including costing those services. 

 To ensure optimum utilisation of available resources, arrange for the purchase of specialist equipment and assist with allocation of section budget. 

To be responsible for the evaluation of new trials ensuring consistent procedures and protocols, and compliance with all relevant statutory regulations, and to advise the R & D Department and Clinicians on the appropriateness of those trials. 

To liaise with Clinical Directors, Lead Clinicians, Consultant Medical Staff, Radiology Services Manager, radiographers and other Medical Physics Experts, within and outside the Trust, in determining all relevant factors relating to the radiation risks associated with clinical trials. 

To lead in research and development in the area of diagnostic imaging, including presenting papers at local and national scientific meetings. Where appropriate to seek to protect intellectual property rights for potential commercial exploitation. 

To participate in activities associated with the National Arrangements for Incidents involving Radiation (NAIR) scheme. 

To maintain up to date knowledge and understanding of scientific and technical developments in X-ray technologies, radiation protection legislation and guidance related to the work of the section and potential developments that could impact upon practice, attending such conferences, seminars, etc as may be agreed. 

To participate in the teaching and training of physics trainees, physics staff, radiographers and other staff groups as required. 

To supervise trainee clinical scientists other trainees within the section. This will include initiation and supervision of MSc projects and smaller projects associated with training.
