Speech & Language Therapy Team Leader - Acute Stroke

Job overview

Due to the retirement of the current post holder we have an exciting opportunity  to lead our inpatient stroke service. The Acute Stroke Unit (ASU) at New Cross Hospital has 12 hyperacute  and 35 acute beds in a fast-paced MDT environment.

Do you have a passion for patient centred acute stroke care with significant communication and dysphagia experience with some experience of managing a team. We have fully recruited to all SLT vacancies on ASU.  We are looking to further expand the size of the SLT ASU team .   

We have access to VF and FEES, with opportunities to develop competencies in this area if not already competent. We plan to expand our FEES service on ASU. We are a forward-thinking team with opportunities to develop and innovate  including personal development and research. 

With teams working across acute and community, we have established SLT teams in general medicine, ESD, inpatient rehab, community, head & neck/voice and critical care. This role will involve working closely with team leads working in rehab and community to ensure smooth transitions for patients across the stroke pathway and to neighbouring trusts.     

We have a robust leadership and supervision structure with established use of job planning to support professional development and personal wellbeing, whilst promoting quality contacts with all patients. We have access to a large supportive admin team and benefit from being part of a large SLT service which includes children’s services. 

Main duties of the job

To work in collaboration with the Head of Service in planning, coordinating delivering and evaluating the Speech & Language Therapy provided to patients within the Trust on a day to day basis.

To lead the service on the acute stroke ward at New including staff management, service development and being an integral part of the work of the Adult Leadership team in wider service progression. 

To provide specialist SLT assessment diagnosis and treatment of patients, 
To ensure the delivery of highly specialist care to all patients in the Trust according to clinical priorities and as required by the Head of Service. To manage and lead a team of SLT staff providing a Therapy service to patients in a designated clinical area. The post holder will ensure that the service provided by the team is patient - centered, effective and of a high quality.

The role includes line management of staff in the Acute Stroke team.

To maintain close working relationships with the MDTs across New Cross to ensure efficient, effective and appropriate delivery of the service. 

To supervise and educate student SLTs to a graduate standard, working with the Universities to ensure standard of practice and teaching meets the standards set by the degree level qualification.
