Job overview

We are looking for an Assistant Clinical Technologist to join our EBME Internal and CERL section of Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering Department. The post holder will be responsible for collecting beds, mattresses and other medical equipment from the wards and deliver them to the CERL where they will clean/decontaminate them, complete simple electrical safety checks, repairs, Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and record all relevant data on the medical devices database. The work will also involve the booking in and out of library equipment and ensuring that library stock levels are maintained at all times.

The post holder will be expected to work to high standards, ensuring that the service operates safely with a minimum downtime. It will be important to establish and maintain effective professional links with clinical users of the service.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be based in the EBME Internal and Clinical Equipment Resource Library (CERL) section of the Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Department. The post holder will be deployed, by Section Head or Operational Quality Manager, in workshop areas of EBME Internal and CERL locations. The post holder will collect beds, mattresses and other medical equipment from the wards, deliver them to the CERL where they will clean/decontaminate them, complete simple electrical safety checks, repairs, Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and record all relevant data on the medical devices database. The work also involves booking in and out of library equipment and ensuring library stock levels are maintained at all times.

When the need arises the post holder is required to support other EBME Internal and CERL staff who are responsible for SafeHands staff and patient badges. They will work flexibly when required to maximise effectiveness of the services. 

The post holder is expected to work to high standards and maintain effective links with clinical users of the service.

The service will normally be provided over 7 days per week, standard being 37.5 hours over 5 days with on call, which may involve working unsocial/additional hours as necessary with the post holder expected to demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to negotiate flexible working hours as appropriate.

He/she should have properly insured personal transport available. This will be a four-wheeled vehicle.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To be managerially and technically responsible to the EBME Internal & CERL Section Head for the service provided by the EBME Internal & CERL section to clinical wards and departments.

To be professionally accountable for matters that affects the calibration, servicing and maintenance of medical electronic equipment to the EBME Internal & CERL Section Head.

To be accountable to the Band 6 who acts in a daily supervisory role, the Band 6 acts upon delegated authority from the EBME Internal & CERL Section Head.

To transport beds, mattresses and other medical equipment between wards/departments and the CERL workshop for the purpose of PPM, cleaning or repair.

To clean/decontaminate beds, mattresses and other medical equipment in compliance with set procedures.

To complete electrical safety checks and basic maintenance, including PPM and repairs, on beds, mattresses and other medical equipment in compliance with set procedures.

To maintain records of cleaning/decontamination/maintenance on the CERL’s database and f2.                                                                                                                                                    

To assist the clinical technologist with the routine, practical aspects of the work of the EBME Internal & CERL section. This will include the completion of all records, communication with wards, answering telephone inquiries/Helpdesk calls and assisting with maintenance programming.

To participate in ordering and collecting of cleaning materials, stationery and other items as required.

To assist with the general clerical work of the section.

To assist with audit and QA procedures for the improvement and development of the service.

To carry out the booking in and out of library equipment and ensuring that library stock levels are maintained at all times. This work will include inspection, cleaning and testing of equipment collected from the wards prior to placing back into stock within the library.

To undertake any other duties which may be required by the Head of Department, Head of Clinical Engineering or Operational Managers which are appropriate to the post.

To assist the CERL (SafeHands) staff, when required, with the delivery, collection and other duties associated with staff and patient badges, including decontamination and battery replacement.

 To demonstrate a flexible approach to the needs of the MPCE Department.

To conform to safe working practices, and departmental policies and procedures.

To conform to the systems, processes and procedures as detailed in the department’s ISO 9001:2015 Quality Manual.

To contribute as required to the continual improvement of the department’s Quality Management System, including its systems, processes and procedures.

To conform to the systems, processes and procedures required to interact with the department’s Q-Pulse Document Management System.

These tasks may be varied from time to time in consultation with the post holder, in order to meet the needs of the service.

This Job Description may be reviewed periodically in the light of developing work requirements.  The post holder will be expected to contribute to that review.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 5 GCSE passes at Grade 4 (previously C) or above, including Maths, English, or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of decontamination techniques to be gained through in-post training.
  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems to be gained through in-post training or previous experience.
  • Knowledge of decontamination techniques.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Must have a basic understanding of decontamination techniques.
  • Must be computer literate and numerate.
  • Must have a basic understanding of electrical safety requirements.
  • Verbal and written skills must be good and/or of good potential.
Desirable criteria
  • Must demonstrate a willingness to develop new skills including decontamination techniques and computer based systems work.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to work on own initiative.
