Job overview

To assist the nursing staff with direct care of patients, working regularly without direct supervision but with guidance from the Directorate Support Manager / Nurse in charge.

To assist with the movement of patients around the Emergency Department including the Ambulance off load area, Rapid assessment area, throughout the rest of the department and base wards.

 

Main duties of the job

To support the Nursing team in transferring patients to other areas as required, including radiology and other wards/ areas. 

To provide support to the nursing team working collaboratively with members of the multi-disciplinary team and contributing positively to the delivery of high quality compassionate care. 

To uphold the fundamental standards of safely and quality always putting the patients first and protecting them from harm.  

To keep the clinical environment tidy and well maintained

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.          To assist registered nurses/ health care professionals in the delivery of individualised holistic patient care according to policy/ procedure. 

2.         To ensure that consent is obtained prior to delivering all aspects of patient care.

3.         To ensure care is delivered with compassion and respect to all            patients.  

4.         To involve relatives/ carers in the delivery of care interacting with them helpfully and in a friendly manner providing information as appropriate demonstrating effective interpersonal skills and maintaining confidentiality. 

5.         To ensure privacy and dignity are always maintained and protect        confidential information

6.      To assist with care of the deceased patient including transferring patients to the viewing room, last offices and occasionally accompanying relatives to the hospital Mortuary. 

7.    To safely transport samples to the laboratories in a timely and professional manner.  

8.         To ensure that appropriate moving and handling techniques and        equipment are used when manual handling.

9.         To chaperone patients requiring clinical examination as per Trust        policy.

10.      To safely escort patients to other areas/ departments as requested by the registered nurse/ health care professional. 

11.      To report back any relevant information to the registered nurse accountable for the patient’s care. 

12.  Make the care of people your first concern, ensuring the patient has a positive  experience whilst in your care

13.   To answer the telephone in a courteous and professional manner, accurately taking messages and informing the relevant person(s). 

14.     To ensure areas are maintained clean and tidy, and are appropriate stocked against agreed levels, including storage areas and medical equipment including checking oxygen an suction at least twice each shift. 

15.      Re-stocking cubicles and cleaning trollies after each use and preparing the area to receive the next patient. 

16.      To replace empty oxygen cylinders as necessary.

17.     To re-stock theatres and plaster room and the linen stores throughout the shift. 

18.     To maintain an adequate supply of walking aids

19.   To empty and replace linen bags

20.   To undertake fire and security checks each shift

21.  Ensuring patients have a safe hands badge before leaving the department to other areas

22. Checking the disacharge checklist and documenting the time that the patient has left the department. 

23. To comply with Health and Safety Regulations and to report accidents/ untoward incidents/ hazards/ unsafe equipment to the nurse in charge/ registered practitioner immediately, utilising the incident reporting system. 

24.   To attend mandatory training and such courses/ lectures/ in-service training, as indicated by the needs of the service and own personal development, as indicated at appraisal and within personal development plan (PDP). 

25.  To be familiar with and comply with all appropriate Trust policies and procedures.  

26.  At all times maintain a professional image and comply with the Trust’s Dress Code Policy.

Applicant requirements
