Breast Screening Consultant Radiographer

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a highly motivated and clinically experienced team, The Breast Screening Service at The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust.  

This is a chance to work with a progressive and expanding team, dedicated multi-disciplinary and specialist colleagues. 

Supported by an excellent team of specialist breast care nurses, Advanced Practitioners, Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners and healthcare assistants, you will be using state-of-the-art imaging equipment, recently installed at all sites covered by the programme. The new equipment will include tomosynthesis as well as stereo and vacuum assisted biopsy. The service has 3 new screening mobiles with Hologic 3Dimensions equipment. 

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical expertise and have excellent communication skills. As a key member of the MDT, the post holder will be expected to contribute to team discussions and decisions and will, be trained to Masters Level. 

The post holder will be experienced in breast and axillary ultrasound, reporting symptomatic and surveillance mammograms and performing stereotactic guided procedures, ultrasound-guided core biopsies, vacuum assisted biopsies and excisions, guide wire localisations, cyst and abscess aspirations and axillary node biopsies without supervision.

  • To provide and facilitate a high level of care to patients presenting with, or who are at risk of, breast disease, including the assessment and diagnosis of patients managing complete episodes of careThe highest level of interpersonal skills is required to inform patients of a cancer diagnosis and gain compliance to proceed with an intervention e.g., biopsy. Highly emotive situations are encountered when imaging is indicative of recurrent/progressive disease   

  • To exercise expert clinical judgements routinely and represent the patient's best interest throughout the care pathway.  

  • To make critical, complex and sometimes contentious decisions as an integral part of each episode of care.  

  • To be highly effective at managing individual patients. Responsible for the emotional and physical wellbeing of patients undergoing breast imaging, to include those with learning disability and other vulnerable adults

Skills must be maintained to be able to provide enhanced direct patient care frequently performing examinations with a high degree of precision and hand eye co-ordination for small screen detected (3mm) abnormalities, sometimes under highly unpleasant and emotional conditions. When a tiny miscalculation could result in misdiagnosis or failed operations. On a daily basis physical ability to manoeuvre the imaging interventional equipment to adapt technique to meet the patients’ needs at a very high level of accuracy. Standard IT skills necessary for accurate input and retrieval of imaging data on CRIS, use of PAC’s, use of Trust IT systems and accessing e-learning

 

Accountable for own professional actions which includes accepting responsibility when directly supervising others. 

To direct others in their clinical practice and accepting responsibility for those directions 

To identify areas of radiographic practice for audit in order to improve imaging and service quality and patient experience and to implement the necessary changes in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. 

To use evidence-based practice, audit and research to inform and contribute to a change in clinical practice in association with the multi-disciplinary team and the lead clinician 

Take steps to safeguard the welfare, health & safety of all staff, patients and visitors according to local policy and advising of changes required. 

 

There will be exposure to highly distressing, emotional and stressful conditions which involve prolonged periods of intense concentration with frequent interruptions. There is a frequent requirement to make and implement, decisions that require immediate action under highly emotional and stressful conditions. The ability to work as a team with colleagues for support is an essential part of the role.  

To ability to rapidly adapt to changing situations and demands is required and to assist junior staff with this. 

On a daily basis there is a requirement to make and implement, decisions that require immediate action under highly emotional and stressful conditions i.e., inform patients that the imaging appearances are those of a carcinoma, or recurrence.  During clinical procedures the post holder will be subject to unpleasant working conditions e.g. uncontained blood, pus, infected serous fluid during needle core biopsies, sweat from axillary investigations, localisations and abscess drainages.  

 Hazardous waste which should be managed using infection control recommendations and policies Working within a controlled radiation environment. 

 

To provide leadership and support the team.  

 

  Clinical time is allocated in sessions (blocks of time) and Consultant Radiographers are expected to ensure optimum utilisation of the sessions allocated to them, with both time and productivitySessions will be split into: Clinical, reporting, audit and administration. 

 

Responsibility may be subject to change, as required by the needs of the service.

  • Post Graduate course in Breast Ultrasound at Masters level
  • Post Graduate Course in image guided intervention at Masters level

Knowledge

  • Specialist expertise underpinned by theory and extensive practical experience in all areas – ultrasound, intervention and Image/Tomosynthesis interpretation
  • Must have advanced specialist knowledge across a range of procedures and practices within Breast Imaging that is underpinned by theoretical study at Masters level
  • Experience of research/audit at high level
