Consultant in Diagnostic Radiology special interest in cardiac imaging

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust is a friendly, integrated healthcare provider focused on improving the life chances and health outcomes of our diverse population.

We have three strategic objectives:

People: To cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff;

Patients: To be good or outstanding at everything we do;

Population: To work seamlessly with partners to improve lives;

We run services from Sandwell, City and Rowley Regis Hospitals, Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre, Birmingham Treatment Centre, the Lyng and Leasowes Intermediate Care Centre. Our GP practices and community teams provide care in schools, healthcare centres and at home.

Our next milestone is opening the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), a once in a career opportunity to shape care transformation within and beyond the hospital walls.

Developing and caring for our People is fundamental. We were one of the first Trusts to provide the Real Living Wage, as well as a Live and Work scheme to support people at risk of homelessness into paid work and training. We offer a range of staff benefits, health & wellbeing support and will help you to bring your ambition to life through our bespoke training and development programmes. As “People” is one of our three strategic objectives, we make a continued commitment to prioritise support for all our colleagues.

Healthcare services have a significant impact on the environment. We are committed to embedding sustainable practices. We expect all colleagues to support the delivery of our Green Strategic Plan and to drive positive changes in their department.

Job overview

This is a new post, intended to maintain and develop the existing radiology service in preparation for the move to the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital. The successful candidates will be general radiologists with Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (or equivalent) and be on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of their CCT at the time of interview. Wide training and experience in general radiology as well as experience in cross-sectional imaging is required. Experience in the following subspecialties is desirable - GU Radiology  (Male and Female), Paediatric Radiology and Cardiac Radiology -  to complement the skills of consultant group, however other subspecialties would be considered. The successful candidate will be expected to take part in training and supervision of junior radiologists allocated to the Department

Main duties of the job

 The posts will include sessions at both Sandwell Hospital and City Hospital. The Trust will be reconfiguring its services in advance of the move to the Midland Metropolitan Hospital and the post-holder will be required to work at any of the Trust’s sites, but with minimal cross site travel.

The department has established a DUTY radiologist in the working week, who is the main point of contact, with calls screened by a secretary, minimising interruptions in remaining reporting sessions.

This post is for consultant radiologists with special interest in a number of areas including Cardiac Radiology.

Working for our organisation

A community of half a million is eagerly anticipating the brand new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital which will be opening in 2024. It will be worth the wait. Its opening will be the beginning of a fresh chapter in our ambitious journey to be the nation’s leading provider of integrated care. This new state of the art acute hospital in Grove Lane, Smethwick will bring together all acute services onto one site.
