Advanced Speech and Language Therapist

Band 7

Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, skilled SLT to work within our dedicated team of acute inpatient therapists with babies, infants and young people admitted to Birmingham Children's Hospital with complex feeding, swallowing and/or communication needs.

The successful applicant will initially work across all inpatient wards including  PICU, HDU and the neonatal surgery ward, through a shared caseload. There will be opportunities for case discussion and support in managing highly complex presentations.

The inpatient SLTs work primarily with acute inpatients who present with an acute change to their feeding and swallowing and/or communication needs. Referrals are accepted from all specialties and wards within the hospital including for example, general paediatrics, neurology, ENT, cardiology, and oncology. The successful applicant, once settled into the role, will be expected to take a lead within one of the specialist areas.

Main duties of the job

  • The provision and development of a highly specialist service to infants, children and young people with complex dysphagia and acquired communication needs, underpinned by current evidence informed practice.
  • To work closely and in collaboration with the wider Multidisciplinary Teams (MDT), other professionals including local Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs), parents/carers and community teams; to ensure well-coordinated integrated SLT care in a specialist clinical area.
  • To demonstrate clinical effectiveness through use of evidence-based practice and outcome measures, own professional development and research activity.
  • To develop and deliver teaching and training to relevant providers, and Specialist Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) within BWCH, under the supervision of the Clinical Lead/Inpatient Team Coordinator.
  • To undertake research and/or audit in a specialist clinical area to enhance patient care, evaluate service and clinical developments.
  • To use knowledge of specialist clinical areas to actively contribute to the development of care and treatment pathways.
