Job overview
Are you a Learning Disability or Mental Health Nurse looking for an opportunity to develop your skills around Transforming Care for children and young people with learning Disability and / or autism who are at risk of hospital admission?
We are excited to announce that we have a band 6 nurse vacancy, based at Finch Road, and covering citywide localities in our 'Disability Intensive Care Enhanced' (DICE) team. This is a 9 month fixed term maternity cover. You will be offered a comprehensive induction package and ongoing training and development to support with the role.
The post will involve holistic assessment of children and young people with learning disability and / or autism who are at risk of psychiatric hospital admission. You would quickly and effectively develop interventions to support young people and their families; risk assessing and care planning based on recognised evidence to deliver outcomes. You will get opportunity to work directly with children, young people and their families to meaningfully understand the difficulties that they experience.
You will be supported by a knowledgeable multi-disciplinary team, including psychologists, nurses, psychiatrists, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and highly skilled support workers. You will build relationships with other organisations, and build positive relationships with wider mental services, education settings and social care.
Main duties of the job
The Forward Thinking Birmingham DICE team covers the whole of the Birmingham geographical area. The age range is 0-19 for those children and young people who have a moderate to profound learning disability, and 0-18 for those with autism.
Members of the Forward Thinking Birmingham partnership multi - disciplinary Service includes Consultant Psychiatrists and other medical staff, Clinical Psychologists, Child Psychotherapists, Learning Disability and Mental Health Nurses, Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists
The successful applicant would work directly with children and young people who have learning disability and / or autism to reduce the risk of psychiatric hospital admission.
Networking, multi-agency liaison and working within complex systems is an essential part of the role, therefore the successful applicant would need strong communication skills, and an ability to foster positive working relationships both within and outside of the trust.
The successful applicant would provide clinical supervision and day to to guidance for other members of the team.
Experience working with children and young people with autism and / or learning disabilities will be essential; along with an understanding of mental health presentations within the complexity of neurodiversity.

Essential criteria
- NMC registered nurse
- Educated to degree level, or with significant knowledge and experience of working at a senior nurse level
- Relevant postgraduate study
- Appropriate ‘mentorship’ (or equivalent) qualification
Knowledge

- Significant experience of working with people with LD/A
- Significant experience of working with children and young people with mental health needs
- Varied continuing professional development relevant to practise
- Willingness to undertake additional training as required
- Experience of supporting individuals with behaviours that challenge those around them
- Experience of supporting children and young people with LD/A who are at risk of needing hospital admission in line with transforming care agenda
