Anatomical Pathology Technician

NHS AfC: Band 4

Job overview

Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust (BWCH) is a leading provider of healthcare to women, babies and their families in South Birmingham. Mortuary Services are part of the Cellular Pathology Department, under the Division of Medicine, Diagnostics & Therapies Clinical Group.

The Mortuary (BWH Site) provides Perinatal Pathology and Placental Pathology services to BWH and other hospitals in the West Midlands.

The department has a vacancy for an Anatomical Pathology Technician to undertake duties in this specialised area and help provide high quality, safe and caring mortuary / post mortem services as part of a team, as well as supporting bereavement services within the trust.

Successful candidates will be expected to work principally during core mortuary hours Monday to Friday 08:00 to 16:00.

Candidates must hold a Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology / equivalent qualification, and have a good working knowledge of HTA and ISO 15189 standards. Previous experience working in a paediatric / perinatal mortuary would be desirable. You must be motivated, methodical, accurate and be able to work under pressure and as part of a team. Good communication skills are essential.

A visit to the mortuary would be actively encouraged.

Main duties of the job

  • Receive and record on computer, babies from BWH and outside hospitals, and prepare them for examination, including X-Ray, basic photography and weight and measurements.
  •  Assist during post mortem examination and placental examination.
  • Maintain the mortuary suite, equipment and instruments in a clean and biologically safe condition.
  • Prepare deceased babies/children for viewing by relatives.
  • Produce mementos (photo’s, clay hand and foot prints) for a deceased family.
  • Maintain accurate records of the activity of the mortuary.

  • Undertake any other appropriate duties as directed by the Mortuary Manager / Deputy Manager or Head BMS.
