Job overview

A new, exciting opportunity has arisen for a Junior Clinical Fellow (JCF) to join the Trauma and Orthopaedics Department at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. This post is fixed term period of 6 months with the option to extend. Ideally looking for someone to start as soon as possible.

Main duties of the job

The role of the Junior Clinical Fellow is varied, including ward cover (trauma & elective), fracture clinics, SHO on-calls, elective clinics (if allocated to work with a Consultant), assisting in elective theatres and trauma theatres. This role will have exposure to all areas of the department.

Within this, there are plenty of educational opportunities including planned teaching, simulation sessions and departmental teaching sessions are arranged by the Consultants and Registrars. JCF posts are also provided with study leave allowance.

The Junior Clinical Fellow post plays an important support role within the department, including helping with FY1/FY2/GPTVS/CT1 inductions.

Working for our organisation

More and more UK doctors are opting to take time out of training in order to pursue medical and personal interests abroad. Here at Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, we feel passionately about the personal and professional benefits to be gained by taking time out from medical training – whether your motivation is to broaden your clinical exposure, to resolve specialty or career indecision, to pursue personal interests, or even just to exercise some autonomy over your work and professional development or for travel and adventure.

We will aim to meet your preferences in terms of both length and speciality of post and new jobs may become available as the year progresses.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Whilst not formal training posts these jobs are either generated from gaps in the training programmes or established trust posts. The Trust is committed to the educational development of medical staff within this programme. Candidates will be assigned an educational supervisor.

We are in the initial process of establishing an Education qualification (PG Cert Edu) with the University of Reading and hope to secure funding to assist with this.

We are determined to support successful applicants with career progression and actively encourage and support involvement in Quality Improvement, learning and exam/interview preparation. Applicants will be assigned an educational supervisor for the year and will be encouraged to attend appropriate teaching sessions within the trust.

We also run a structured teaching programme in which JCF doctors provide medical student teaching and obtain feedback on this. JCF doctors also have the option to be mentored by previous JCF doctors.
