Band 4 Senior Ophthalmic Technician
This is a part-time post for 20 hours per week.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 4 Senior Ophthalmic Technician to join our expanding team of Ophthalmic Technicians, supporting 17 Consultant Ophthalmologists working across the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.
Services are provided across Berkshire and South Oxfordshire with clinics held in Reading, Thatcham, Windsor, Bracknell, and Henley-on-Thames - you will therefore be required to work across multiple sites.

The successful candidate will be required to deliver the technical aspects of a patient’s ophthalmic care, including undertaking automated visual field assessments, imaging using OCT and Optos, and corneal mapping using the Pentacam.
They will also be required to facilitate the safe and effective running of virtual ophthalmic services across Berkshire.

Swydd ddisgrifiad a phrif gyfrifoldebau manwl
- To provide technical support to the Ophthalmology service.
- To independently assess and interpret visual acuity measurements.
- To independently perform accurate imaging of the eye using OCT on a range of patients referred from the ophthalmology service.
- To independently perform accurate visual field assessment using the Humphrey Visual Field Analyser on a range of patients referred from the ophthalmology service.
- To undertake retinal photography using the Optos Camera for patients attending the eye clinic.
- To undertake intraocular pressure measurement using Reichert ORA, i-Care tonometry.
- To undertake corneal mapping using Pentacam.
- To be able to exchange information with patients using persuasion and reassurance to ensure best test results while making sure the patient is comfortable – many patients will be elderly and require moderate physical help. Empathy is needed when dealing with patients with sight threatening and life changing sight problems.
- To liaise with other staff within the service to ensure a good patient experience, keep visits to a minimum and maximise resources.
- To communicate well with all members of the team and demonstrate a courteous and helpful approach to patients and visitors.
