Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic Consultant Neurologist to join our existing team of Consultants and Specialist Nurses to support the Neurology service provided across the West of Berkshire.

For newly qualified applicants, a second on-call senior neurologist will be rostered until the new starter is fully established in the consultant role.

Please note the Simulation date is the 8th November 2024 and the Interview date is the 14th November 2024.

Main duties of the job

This post represents an addition to enhance the Neurology Services across the West of Berkshire and in particular help meet the rising demand for neurology clinic appointments. This post is full-time (10PA) and predominantly Out Patient based.

We will encourage the successful applicant to develop a specialist interest to expand or complement the existing service. Mentoring and development opportunities will be available to recently qualified applicants in the fields represented by our existing senior consultants, but we would also welcome the addition of new specialist interests to complement the existing services. We are keen to see clinics normally only available in tertiary centres become at the RBH for the benefit of our patients.

Applicants who are unable to work full-time for personal reasons are invited to apply, as are those wishing to job share. Applicants are required to hold a CCT in Neurology or be within six months of accreditation by the interview date.

Working for our organisation

The medical team consists of six consultants and an Associate Specialist along with a specialist trainee from the Oxford Rotation and 2 GPwER's. There is a large team of ten specialist nurses led by a nurse consultant who provide support in individual disease areas.  Approximately 10,000 patients are seen in an outpatient setting per year. In keeping with the Trust’s aim of providing care closer to home, clinics are provided at the Royal Berkshire Hospital but also in facilities in Henley, Bracknell, Newbury and Wokingham. There is also increasing provision of video-clinics. Nerve conduction studies and EMG are provided by the neurologists in house and also insourced by a third party, with complex cases performed by neurophysiology services at the Oxford University Hospital Trust. EEG is currently also provided in Oxford, although there are plans for a dedicated in-house service. There is a full range of imaging services and a weekly meeting with the neuro-radiologists
