Band 6 Specialist Radiotherapy Engineer
The Radiotherapy Physics Section provides clinical scientific and technical support to the Berkshire Cancer Centre (BCC) within the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust (RBFT).
Key functions of the Section comprise radiotherapy equipment maintenance and treatment planning for external beam and brachytherapy treatments.
The prime objective of the Radiotherapy Engineering Service is to keep unplanned downtime, and hence disruption of patients’ radiotherapy treatments, to a minimum.
The service maintains and provides a wide range of highly specialized, complex, patient critical equipment. The engineers must therefore be able to work to an extremely high standard of safety and be accountable.
Main duties of the job
Main duties include the provision of maintenance, fault-finding and repair of radiation therapy systems and treatment simulation systems including all patient accessories required for treatment.
The oncology computer network integrates all radiotherapy medical devices with support from the Trust’s IT department.
The postholder will take responsibility for the management and maintenance of the radiotherapy IT, networking and connectivity. They will also manage patient treatment data extraction as required from the Record and Verification system.
The postholder also manages the maintenance and improvement of the ISO Quality System as applied to engineering. Close monitoring and maintenance of downtime statistics will part of the duties of this post, as directed by the Head of Radiotherapy Physics.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BSc Hons Clinical Technology or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
- Incorporated Status with registered Engineering Council UK professional body, or Registered Clinical Technologist (or on the voluntary register).
Experience
Essential criteria
- Specialist knowledge of clinical technology across a range of work procedures relating to medical equipment support, repair and Quality Control, particularly in the field of radiotherapy technologies.
Desirable criteria
- Proven experience in electronic engineering. Multi-disciplinary working experience.
Applicant requirements
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
