Job overview

There is a new full-time post for a Specialty Doctor to contribute to malignant and non-malignant haematology services at a middle grade (SpR)/staff grade level. The role may also be appropriate for a suitably qualified person to take on as part time if it fulfils the department’s expectations and needs.  The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the day to day functioning of the department at a level based on their experience. The successful applicant will work with all consultants and existing staff grade/middle grade doctors to cover the services provided at the trust. The successful applicant will support the current delivery of Clinical haematology services, including contribution to the future development at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a suitable qualified, enthusiastic individual to take this post and there is a possibility to develop subspecialist interests within haematology as part of the restructuring of the Clinical Haematology department at Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. There is also potential for collaboration with Oxford University Hospitals (OUH), which is one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in the UK and has a national and international reputation for development of a speciality interest if the candidate wishes to. 

Working for our organisation

Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Foundation trust is a busy DGH, providing level 3 services in Haematology, in partnership with Oxford University Hospitals. We are a team of 7 Consultants, 3 rotational registrars, 2 associate specialists and 5 specialist nurses providing haematology services to the patients of West Berkshire. We have a purpose built in patient and Day unit services and a well-supported OP service at the main site, RBH and satellite clinics at nearby Hospitals.

The appointee will have the opportunity, and be encouraged to, develop laboratory expertise, take part in clinical trials, undertake management responsibilities that are appropriate and be involved in teaching and training. Senior staff grade appointees may eventually be able to develop in to an Associate Specialist if such opportunities present themselves in future.

Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the GMC/eligible for registration
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • Haematology experience
Desirable criteria
  • Haematology experience at a middle grade level
  • Post graduate qualification in Haematology

Clinical Experience & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Training in Haematology
  • Previous responsibility for clinical governance and GMC Good Medical Practice

Clinical Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • All aspects of general Haematology and patient care

Audit Management & IT

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work within clinical governance guidelines.
  • Undertake audits and present data as required.
  • Good IT skills, use of patient and hospital database.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of clinical leadership role demonstrating accountability for quality of care, financial controls and efficient management of workforce

Research. Teaching skill & experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence or providing good teaching and supervision to trainees to the level of GMC accredited educational supervision level.
  • Evidence of involvement in clinical research
Desirable criteria
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Educational qualification

  • Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English.
