Our Acute Paediatric team are looking for a friendly, enthusiastic and innovative physiotherapist to join our sociable and dynamic team.
The Luton and Dunstable Hospital Therapy Department would like to present an exciting opportunity for a Physiotherapist to join an established team in the Acute Paediatric Department
The team provide therapy input in both Inpatient and Outpatients settings both week days and weekends on a rota basis
Applications are invited from suitably motivated and innovative individuals to join an energetic and evolving Therapy Team within a reputable Trust. The post holders are required to be enthusiastic and passionate about the field of therapy and must be able to work flexibly across weekends and extended hours.
The department has a strong commitment to CPD and supports staff members with development.
This post will allow you to develop a wide range of clinical, managerial, organisational, teaching and supervision skills. You will play an active role in audits and service development. We offer a well-established supervision and appraisal structure. We encourage individual progression within the Band 6 role and have a firm commitment to in service training and CPD as well as supporting staff to attend external courses and conferences.

Objectives & Purpose of the post
1. Assessment of patients with diverse presentations and complex physical and psychological conditions, determine a diagnosis and formulate and deliver treatment programme
2. To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.
3. To plan, supervise, educate and assess physiotherapy students
4. To participate in the development and delivery of education and training for other health professionals caring for patients with Acute Paediatric conditions.
5. To undertake generic work in Acute Paediatrics within the field of occupational therapy to a competent standard, supported by clinical supervision from non-physiotherapy senior staff.
6. To hold responsibility for own caseload and be responsible for patients with physiotherapy problems
7. Supported by the Band 7 Acute Paediatric physiotherapy lead, to design and undertake evidence-based audit and research projects
8. To deputise for the band 7 Acute Paediatric team leader as required

Clinical
- To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work.
- To attend appropriate multi-disciplinary team meetings and “board meetings” as required.
- To undertake a comprehensive holistic assessment of patients . Use advanced clinical reasoning skills and highly developed manual assessment techniques to provide an accurate diagnosis.
- To formulate and deliver appropriate individual evidence based physiotherapy treatment programme for all patients.
- To take delegated responsibility, from the Acute Paediatric band 7, for managing patients with particular conditions and be responsible for providing specialist physiotherapy assessment and treatment plans.
- To formulate accurate prognoses and recommend best course of intervention, developing comprehensive discharge plans.
- To assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid informed consent.
- To have a good working knowledge of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) and follow-up rehabilitation and treatment services.
- To participate in MDT meetings, case conferences and home visits as needed.
- To use recognised outcome measures, assessment tools and advanced clinical skills to evaluate patient progress
- To manage clinical risk within own patient caseload.
- To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive written patient assessment and treatment records
- To be responsible for the safe and competent use of all gym equipment and patient appliances and aids (e.g. walking aids and manual handling equipment) used within the role.
- To develop and evaluate written information for patients and carers as agreed with the Acute Paediatric Band 7.
On Call and Weekend Working
- To be an active member of the adult/paediatric respiratory emergency evening On Call and weekend rota.
- In the emergency on call setting, as the lead physiotherapist, to provide advice to medical and nursing staff and other members of the MDT regarding patient’s respiratory function/condition by telephone or in person.
- To undertake the assessment and treatment of acutely ill patients with respiratory problems, who may have a complex presentation.
- To work as a lone practitioner within an emergency. Further support is available from senior colleagues by telephone or in person if requested.
- To mentor, supervise and support junior and less experienced physiotherapy colleagues during weekend and on call working.
- To attend agreed mandatory training to maintain clinical competence in acute respiratory physiotherapy
Communication
- To use a range of skilled verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients.
- To use the above communication skills to persuade, negotiate and motivate patients to co-operate with their treatment,
- To provide and receive highly complex and/or sensitive information including information regarding prognosis, limitation to function and/or mobility and changes in social situation.
Organisational and Managerial
- To delegate work appropriately to named Band 5 and assistant/technical instructor colleagues within their scope of competence.
- To be responsible for prioritising, organising and planning own caseload to meet service requirements of the acute wards, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Musculoskeletal outpatients.
- To be adaptable and readjust plans as situations change/arise.
- To ensure that your own practice and that of staff under your supervision meet the required professional guidelines of therapy practice and hospital policies / procedures.
- With support from the Acute Paediatric Band 7, to take a major role in the development and implementation of operational processes and systems of work
- Alongside the Acute Paediatric band 7, to actively support staff within the Acute Paediatric therapy team
- With support form and in conjunction with the Acute Paediatric Band 7, to conduct the appraisal of junior staff within the Acute Paediatric physiotherapy unit.
- Whilst working within the Acute Paediatric team, to deputise for the team lead in their absence, taking the lead role in the day-to-day operational management of the team
Education and Training
- To be responsible for teaching and assessing student physiotherapists to graduate level physiotherapeutic skills and knowledge within core clinical areas.
- To participate in the planning, facilitating and evaluating in-service training programmes to the wider Acute Paediatric team.
- To provide formal and informal teaching sessions regarding physiotherapy practice for members of the MDT to include nursing and medical staff when required
- To attend any Trust mandatory training sessions annually and ensure that all e-learning modules are updated as required.
Quality and Effectiveness
- To work within Trust wide clinical guidelines, policies, procedures, and those agreed locally within the Therapy Department.
- To undertake the measurement and evaluation of your work and current practices
- To undertake and manage with support of the Acute Paediatric Band 7, service audit and research projects
- To participate in the identification, development and implementation of appropriate standards, protocols and operational policies
- To participate in the development and monitoring of the service in line with local and national requirements and standards.

- To maintain and develop current knowledge of evidenced-based practice in the areas relevant
- To design, develop and undertake evidence-based projects within the Acute Paediatric unit supported by the Acute Paediatric Band 7
- To participate in the staff appraisal scheme as an appraisee and to be responsible for complying with your agreed personal development programmes

- To demonstrate ongoing personal development through participation in internal and external development opportunities
