An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Research Nurse or Research Practitioner to support NIHR portfolio studies working as part of the oncology research team at the Luton & Dunstable Hospital FT.

The post-holder will be required to work within the oncology research team and wider multi-disciplinary team in the management of your own caseload. This will involve the identification, recruitment, education and monitoring of patients participating in research along with the timely collation and documentation of accurate data.

The successful applicant will be responsible for managing a portfolio of clinical trials.

The post requires excellent communication skills and an understanding of scientific protocols.

Experience in working within the field of research and within oncology is desirable.
A mature attitude and ability to work autonomously, as well as part of a team are essential.

  • Ensure NIHR recruitment targets are met as agreed by CRN North Thames and working towards achieving the NIHR CRN High level Objectives
  • To maintain detailed knowledge of the protocols for the clinical trials
  • Co-ordinate and manage the collection of research data according to the trial protocol, developing systems for tracking patients to identify when next data collection stage is required. Take responsibility for accurate and complete clinical trials data collection using trials documents.
  • To provide relevant MDT with information and education regarding current clinical trials. Ensure all personnel involved in clinical trials are made aware of any changes or protocol amendments
  • Liaise with clinical trial centres as necessary and with relevant departments in order to ensure smooth running of clinical trials for patients.
  • To assist in the informed consent process. To provide verbal and written information and to be a point of contact to patients for the duration of their involvement in a clinical trial. And when appropriate act as sole signatory for consent to clinical trials.

Experience

  • The relevant experience working in Oncology

  • Experience of caring for patients involved in clinical trials
  • Experience in administering and monitoring trial medications.
  • Experience in setting up, recruiting to, closing down and archiving clinical trials.
  • Experience of teaching, supervising and mentoring junior staff.

Knowledge

  • A good knowledge of: 1) clinical trials process 2) oncology pathways 3) regulatory clinical research frameworks
  • Knowledge of the data protection Act (2018) and implications for confidentiality.

  • Sound knowledge of oncology treatment/therapy and practice in the standard setting.
  • Knowledge and use of the local portfolio management system - EDGE

Skills

  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office applications
  • Capable of working with high degree of autonomy.
  • Excellent communication skills to all levels of staff and patients.
  • Capable of working effectively within different multidisciplinary teams.
  • Accurate, legible contemporaneous documentation skills including data collection and entry
  • Excellent time management
  • Proficiency in clinical observations

  • Knowledge and use of local clinical computer applications e.g ICE iPM and EVOLVE.
  • Venepuncture
  • Basic laboratory skills (Preparing samples e.g. Centrifuging and separating into aliquots, slide preparation.)
  • ECG recording with basic interpretation knowledge.
